I would definitely disagree that most places have it for free. Out of 160 odd hotels in Bangkok that we cover, would say less than 15 have it for free.
There are only a few hotels in this price range( 1600 Baht-2000 Baht) that have free internet. Town Lodge and Swiss Grottino. Majestic Suites, Swiss Park, Manhattan and others all charge.
When you say most hotels offer free internet. Would love to hear what hotels do offer this in this price range?
I think that before Sep 30 and next year the price is ok. When compared to other hotels, from Nov 1st many hotels have increased 20-30% on this year.

Anyway, Tim is correct. This wifi (or wired) internet must be a major money making for these hotels. I guess 70-80% of the guests can't live without it.
The advantange of having these hotels charge is that they usually can afford a dedicated support staff to keep it running.
I remember that the Penthouse in Pattaya provided it for free, but it actually never worked because they had no clue.
Then some nice guests (in the form a of a feathered duck and friends) had to fix it (and buy more hardware) on their own accord (and expense).

When you see the Citi Smart condo, hang a right and you will see the green building on the right hand side. Hotel says 3 mins walk from the main road to hotel and vice versa.
