Erawan secures three sites for Ibis budget hotel development

The SET-listed Erawan Group has acquired two sites and entered into an agreement to buy a third for its first Ibis hotels in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya.
The group plans to build 10 economy hotels to tap rising demand from budget and business travellers in Thailand.
It has signed a management agreement for the three hotels with the Accor Group, the Ibis brand owner, according to Kasama Punyagupta, president and chief executive officer of the Erawan Group.
He said the first lbis hotel would open in early 2008, with 710 rooms. The total investment, including land costs, for three hotels is approximately 1.25 billion baht.
Mr Kasama said he was confident that the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport this year and the continued expansion of low-cost airlines would lift the number of inbound tourists, especially budget travellers seeking rooms for between 1,000 and 1,500 baht per night.
''Apart from internal cash flow and proceeds from the recent capital increases, we have already secured project loans for all of Erawan's expansion projects including these three Ibis hotels,'' he said.
He expected the group would be able to secure at least three more sites by mid-2007 and meet its target of having six Ibis hotels by the end of 2008.
The Erawan Group (ERAWAN) reported first-half net profit of 82.4 million baht, an increase of 111% from 39 million in the same period last year, on revenue of 1.65 billion baht, up 25%.
The company's shares closed yesterday on the SET at 4.02 baht, down two satang, in trade worth 4.12 million baht.

Erawan plans hotel in Nana

The Erawan Group has leased 1.5 rai of land for 30 years in Sukhumvit Soi 4 (Soi Nana Tai), to develop its fifth Ibis Hotel at a cost of Bt360 million.
This is part of the company's strategy to diversify its hotel portfolio into the economical, mid-tier segment.
The Ibis Nana Bangkok Hotel, with nearly 200 rooms, will be ideally located in Soi Nana Tai in Bangkok's central business and shopping district, just minutes' walk from Nana Skytrain Station.
The property is scheduled to open in next year's fourth quarter.
"This is the fifth Ibis Hotel to be announced by the company, just one year after signing an MoU [memorandum of understanding] with the Accor Group to develop 10 Ibis Hotels in Thailand, covering six main tourist destinations. They are Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Krabi," president and CEO Kasama Punyagupta said yesterday. "We're confident that all 10 Ibis Hotels will be opened by the end of 2009. This will be a key growth engine for the company starting from 2008," he said.
The group owns two of Bangkok's leading five-star hotels - the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and the JW Marriott Bangkok - and the five-star Renaissance Koh Samui Resort and Spa.
It also operates two shopping centres in the capital: the Erawan Bangkok and Ploenchit Centre.

Sounds great, except for one small thing.
Ibis Hotels in Thailand are not guest friendly. 500 Baht joiners are charged. Hope that their new hotel will not charge. If they do, pretty ironic given the location!
