manhattan, nana are like 40year old hotels and the rooms show their age!! tvs, beds, bathrooms are all old havent been refurbished since the early 80s!
you trying to say swiss grottino is in the same level as manhattan??
dude! sure manhatten has a gym, pool, and other stuff but its a major hotel!! they have larger numbers take tours etc..
how can you compare grottino a small modern new hotel to a 40year old rundown hotel like manhattan??

sure the money 1200bht for either Man, or Mj.. vs 1800
sure your getting the same things, bathroom, safe, tv, double bed, girlfriendly..
BUT. the swiss has modern decor, clean modern rooms less than 2 years old, and even been refurbished after one year! when was the last time nana, manhattan, or MJ redone there places???? haaha exactly!!
you are paying for modern equipment! new beds, modern showers, nicer sheets, duvets, flat screen tv, wireless internet, safe, clean stylish sofa, etc..
some people like to be in a room with nicer cleaner, modern epuipment, others couldnt careless!
so you pay less! maybe becuase you cant afford it I dont know! its 10dollars more!! I mean come on!!

grand president, topaz etc. its not 1600, its 1900!!!
they raised their prices 400BHT!! it was 1500 earlier this year when my friend stayed there.. now its 1900!!
swiss grottino rooms are newer, cleaner, moderner than GP. and only still 100 bht cheaper 200 until oct!
all the hotels are raising the prices!!
give it a couple more years too.. and manhattan and MJ will be around 1600 cheapest and 2000 from the website
the world is increasing in price everywhere!
bangkok is a major city! we have been lucky so far by the prices are slowing coming in..
I have never stayed at the swiss grottino I might stay there in sept I dont know...
but I have stayed in manhattan yes its a nice hotel for what you pay for..
but im on holiday so I should spend alittle extra and get alittle extra 10bucks gets me swiss grottino styles SWEET im there..
NANA I have stayed there.. you get what you pay for in bkk for this place.. location is A+ room is hostel style living, barable, not holiday living tho!
big bed tho.. but there you pay for price and location!
nana was 1150BHT I think..
manhattan was like 20bucks when I stayed there back in 2000 now its 26bucks cheapest..
swiss is not expensive because GP and RP which are their competition are still more expensive and offer nothing more than grottino does!

Good post, mysteryman-
You summed it up very well. I've never stayed at the Swiss Grottino either and probably never will, but I've been there and seen the rooms. Some of the guys who work in my company stay there when the company isn't footing the bill. As you say, they consider it a bargain to pay 1,800b/night for a clean, modern, comfortable small hotel with European ambience. It's a far better alternative to most of the Suk hotels in the same price class.
I definitely get the feeling the flame posts about Swiss Grottino have nothing to do with value for money but more about personality clashes that most readers couldn't give a damn about.

I staid there July 04, the intro deal at about 1100 a night was a steal.
I also believe the current price is a bit high for what you get. My main argument against it (this is me talking) : Beds a bit on the hard side, no swimming pool.
For that price I would rather stay at the Royal President a soi down the road. Location not so good, but a better hotel in my eyes.
I have done enough hotel shopping in Sukhumvit area to know there are a lot of crap around. I'm not spending my one vacation in a year in a worn down crappy hotel like Nana hotel and Manhattan. Arguments like "you do not spend your time in the hotel room" and "a 1000 baht saved a day is a 1000 baht more lady" does not work for me, either.

The Grand President and Royal President both have health clubs and swimming pools. SG does not. I use the pool every day, but if you do not use these facilities, then the RP and GP offer little more than the SG. I have been in the rooms of all three of these facilities, there is not enough difference to make a big deal about, the rooms at the SG are just as nice as the GP or RP.
I have also been in the rooms as the Manhattan and Majestic Suites. The rooms at the SG are far better than the Manhattan, and are similar to the biggest rooms at the Majestic (double deluxe?) However, the majestic does not have in-room Internet.
Many people like the SG, a few don't. I'd stay there if it had a (nice) pool. This thread has all the info, I think, as long as you cut through all the arguing and personal spats.

Every TG I have taken to the SG has loved it. I think these clean modern rooms at the SG help the girls keep their mood. Clean high thread count sheets keep TG's in bed and a nice telly. Also the private enterance is a big plus. Also the perfect location to SC and sm stores close by. I "work out" every night so do not need a gym in the day.
Two weeks and counting 9/1

Don't know about billiard girls but they have a new cute young room-maid. (I managed to take back an even cuter girl who happened to have been her best friend at school! Now what are the chances of a threesome there, I wonder?  )
A bit of building noise was going on at the top of the building while I was there but still a good stay. Where else can you get relatively high-speed Internet access in your room more cheaply?
