Fanta4 has corrected my imperfect english, replace "divide" with "seperate" and it should make sense. The offcial policy has changed.
They tried to market Thailand as a temple and nature travel destination. it didnt really work. they have shifted back to what LOS is, at the same time cracking down local nightlife. The result, nightlife for farang, sounds a little like a ghetto

You guys are probably right. The money from the sex industry is too lucrative to be shut down, but the government is probably under a lot of pressure internationally to do something about this.
If they are trying to segragate and herd the farang sex tourists into small areas, they would really be giving Osama tremendous help in selecting terrorist attack targets. Not a very wise move IMO.

IMHO, I don't think there is any "anti falang, or falang herding into certain night spot areas." Most Thais (naturally outside of those businesses that depend on tourism... although it appears that many tourists can't seem to grasp that there ARE other businesses out there) really could care less about falangs or tourism. I doubt the government is organized enough to do something like that (and have it not come out in the open) anyway.
What we're seeing (again IMO) are actions taken that represent the slowly growing segment of the the middle and upper middle class voting segment (mostly Bangkok based). This is a splinter (I suppose) of the groups that have been traditionally profit and business driven. They are also a well off group, but push family value type issues as well. As much as everyone seems to dislike Purachai, in most circles that I have come across, he is actually quite popular (same for Thaksin). It's the not really a big factional issue. It's some business interests (also upper middle class) vs. the conservative family values segment (also upper middle class). Business here has always won, though. I don't see why this case would be any different. If not a victory, then a profitable compromise (like we see with the closing time issue).

Hadn't seen it before and just thought I'd say that I agree with PR's assessment.
It's important to remember that at the time of initial resistance by some quarters to the social order campaign polls indicated that 80-90% of Thais agreed with it.
As I've said before, while there's a certain amount of inconsistency of thought and even some hypocrisy involved, the fact is the Thais aren't necessarily happy about Thailand being seen as a sexual playground and it would behoove us to remember that it's not a guaranteed right of ours to treat it as such.
