Chompoo: you are right, the special events usually draw a different crowd, much more of the non-working variety. it is the slower days where you really notice the FL there in my opinion...

No doubt the Ripper is indeed spot on, but as for the Society pages you'd be surprised how many falang barhounds and 'mongers have been in there, including myself. It's just a matter of being at the right party/event or working in the right job.
But it don't mean we're Hi-So!

Further to the access question, I wonder what Packripper will say to the following:
It's more who you know, than where you go. If you happen to know someone in those circles, you may find yourself slipping into that crowd (on a superficial level). But as Packripper said with his Holy Grail analogy, it's not necessarily better. And as Bigin said, everywhere you go, a snob is a snob.
Like a lot of guys who are here for a long time and do the nightlife experience to the extreme, I went through a period where I sought only the Holy Grail. Through a job I had and some people I happened to know, I was able to spend some time in the Hi So circles. IMO it's not all it's cracked up to be. Plus there is likely to be a limit to how much you are truly accepted and sometimes you might even feel like you are just a token falang at some events (it's chic to have a nicely dressed falang or two.) I won't necessarily say I experienced either of those things but...
As I said on another thread, I think there might be some confusion or misuse of the term Hi So. Just because a person or place is not P4P, that doesn't mean it's Hi So. Let's not forget that in the last 20 yrs or so, LOS has developed a middle class with disposable income. Maybe we have to think of a new term. Thaiyuppies?
Nah, sounds like a "cute" bondage term.

Yeah, I've been in the pages also (wedding group photo), but I don't feel hi-so by a long shot. But then again, like all of society/wealth, it's a relative thing.
And yes, plenty of falangs on real expat packages, you'll find in the P4P bars. Talk to a few and they'll explain "hi-so" accessibility for you. It's an endless (although not impossible) circle. Few people want to bf/gf real P4P girls. They do (because it kind of jumps up and grabs you around the neck)  and the end results are usually similarly painful (not always of course... not dissin' anyone who is in a successful relationship of this origin).
So they want to upgrade. But then they find out that the rest of society here doesn't necessarily welcome tourists/foreigners with open arms. And like Joe said, it's often a superficial welcome if there is one. That's life. You can't expect the average resident of Orlando to welcome you like a worker at Disneyworld would welcome you. A more realistic bet would be getting to know average middle class people. Not easy either.... many will tell you your best bet is to actually enroll in local classes at university (that's how locals usually form bonds). Takes time, and most probably don't want to go that far, but it's the most realistic approach. Few real shortcuts in life, folks. (just IMO)
Joe, now you'll have people starting threads... "where to meet Thaiyuppies?"

Wow! Yet another superb post from The Ripper. Again with the brilliantly apt metaphors. I think he's totally correct on the expreience of falangs living here.
I thought my post was too long ( "It was!" ) and so I cut it short, but I was going to include as my last paragraph the same thing Pripper said: The middle class is a lot more fertile ground for what most people are seeking and even then it's not easy. It' just like anyplace else it takes time and effort to find a good partner; like Pripper also said (so astutely) shortcuts are few in life.
And when it comes down to it, if you're looking for a good time, it's hard to beat a hot BG w/ a good attitude. They are down to earth, open minded and ....well I'm preaching to the choir, arent I?
