Last night at Glow, ManuelBkk introduced me to a creature of spine-tingling beauty, stunning features and a character of limitless charisma: Planters XO Caribbean rum.

Needles to say, I got to know her quite well. So much so actually, I was plastered by the time Friday turned into Saturday. But I mean that in the nicest possible way. I had to opt for less potent (and unfortunately less tasty) refreshments for the remainder of the evening, in order not to diminish my carnal potential that night.
I for one can confirm that Glow has most likely the most extensive drink list in Bangkok. Where else can you find Tomyang Koong infused voBKa, Chili Pepper Martini’s, Mescal, several kinds of Absinth and home-made moonshine called Lemoncillo?
My usual beverage of choice, the White Russian (also affectionally known as a Caucasian) is mixed with tantalizing perfection. I often judge drinks according to the old “If it smells like fish, it aint good fish” saying. Well, if it smells and tastes like pure alcohol, it isn’t a good drink. If, however it doesn’t taste like alcohol, but like something that makes your taste buds summersault in joy, AND still gets you buzzing in no time, then, my fellow AA members, you have a good drink. And that is what I have been constantly getting at Glow. To illustrate the above, compare a glass of Jack Daniels (kerosene) with a glass of Lagavolin (smooth, oaky, nutty flavor).
Admittedly, I have only been there 5 times, but it seems that music wise, it still needs to find its character: is it a lounge bar, or is it a house-club? A successful formula might be the Café Mambo approach: loungy till about 11 and then smacking house till closing time.
As far as I am concerned, Glow really deserves extensive patronage. Although it might take a while before it finds its niche with the fickly Bangkok crowd.
It has my dedicated vote and I will be there again tonight.

Chill out until about 11 would be good but would also like a bit of variety - i.e. not just house every night.

I have been consistently bringing TG’s to Glow for the early evening aperitif and they simply adore the place. From what I have heard, the word is spreading and hopefully the quantity of the talent will rise accordingly.
A couple of nights ago, one of them ordered a Singapore Sling and it was better then any of the Slingers I had last month in Singapore. The proprietary Glow cocktails (like the butterscotch one) are bloody awesome as well.
One night, Manuel enlightened me on the genuine way to drink mescal (or tequila), namely with a glass of sangrita (some kind of spicy tomato juice). If that stuff wont give you a kick, nothing will.
If, one night, you want to feel like Baudelaire or Rimbaud, order a couple of shots of Absinthe and delve into your true genius.

To me the biggest problem with Glow is the strength of their drinks. I know it sounds pathetic but they are simply too strong. An early evening drink (for which the place is ideally suited) ends up knocking out the whole evening.

That’s the whole idea ! I am totally in favor of that.
You could always ask the bartender to take it easy on the pouring.
