Last Saturday Desyn Masiell and Rowan Blades from John Digweeds Bedrock label did a set at Q-bar. Being a big fan of the Sasha and Digweed School of beats since the mid-90’s, we had no choice but to go check it out.
Both DJ’s spun together (much like their aforementioned masters always do) and provided an accommodating crowd with a well-rounded and polished set that incorporated house classics, deep, tech, funky and progressive beats. All in all much more housy and hence less dark and esoteric then the original Bedrock records like Northern Exposure.
This was a good thing because I assume the Q-bar crowd is not really ready for songs like “Space Maneuvers”, “Breeder” or “Heaven Scent”. Especially not at midnight. It’s more the music you need when you stagger into a club at 9am, nostrils and pupils wide open.
It was obvious both DJ’s were just as frustrated as most of us with the time restrains imposed by the closing hour and hence the limited capability to show of his skills. What can you show in a 3 hour set-out of which only the last hour the club was full? Sasha and Digweed regularly did 8 hour sets at Space.
It became apparent again that Q-bar is too small of a club as it was just to crowded. One could hardly move. God forbid a fire or panic one of these nights. It will be carnage. I tend to stay close to the terrace on the second floor; the jump is not that high.
All in all one of the best nights I had since I have been here in Bangkok. If only because the music was finally something more to my taste.
And, yet again, my dancing skills got me laid. God, I love having rhythm!
