Last Tuesday I met up with AP at the V9 wine bar at the 36th floor of the Sofitel on Silom.

When you come in you are welcomed by a charming maitre d’ who will guide you to your table. While going to the bar, one passes along a hall way which has quite an impressive array of wine in it. Now, I am not a wine drinker, but if that beverage is your wont, you might want to check out V9.

As Abrak pointed out it is indeed “just” a trendy 5-star hotel bar, but I liked the smooth atmosphere. Not too many people and extremely attentive service – as one would expect in such a place. Being located at the 36th floor the view is obviously quite nice, but evidently not as nice as on the 65th floor of the state tower.

The interior is a tad like Synbar but not as curved and refined: it has a neon lit bar and spacious seating. The waitresses are cute in their stylish black “elephant pipe” pants (tight at the buttocks, wider towards the calves).

While enjoying the view, I had a “Bailey’s milk” – which was excellent and potent but came in a coupe de champagne – i.e. a small amount for a 300 baht drink.

From our table we could see The Dome, so we decided to head over there for some more well-deserved potables over there.

Located at the 67th floor of the State Tower, this place evidently has a magnificent view over Bangkok. Actually, as far as I understand, the Italian restaurant, Sirocco, is located on the 67th floor in the Dome (didn’t go there) and the bars (one inside, one outside) and loungy area are on the 64th. The cigar/wine bar inside looks like Hu'u:
A polished wooden interior designed to perfection.

After a little stroll around, we decided to take a seat in the sofa’s in the loungy area - which is a level above the neon-lit and color changing bar downstairs. The sofa's are the same size as the ones upstairs in Bed Supper club, so one can get really comfortable in between the pillows.

The drinks are imaginative and well executed, but as in V9 the portions are small.
I had a couple of Hemmingway Daiquiri's; AP sipped Manhattan's while enjoying
the tremendous view. Drinks come with olives and pistachios - but not JUST olives and nuts. Those olives are amongst the tastiest nibblings I have ever eaten: they are marinated in something sweetish and taste absolutely divine. The pistachios are - I think - curry roasted. Quite sublime as well.

I ordered a plate of European delicacies, which included: Parma ham, Pate, chorizo, an ingeniously crafted flower of aged gruyere cheese and salad. It came with a basket of 4 kinds of fresh bread. These things are the daily bread so to speak where I come from and this was the real McCoy. In the middle of Bangkok of all places.
If you were so inclined you can order some Beluga as well at 30.000 baht per 50 grams. I opted for another tray of those olives.

Needless to say this place should not be on your itinerary if you are on a budget.

These are not the kind of establishments you would go to wearing sandals and/or shorts accompanied by a mini-skirted and tattooed Isaan girl. Well, you could, but *I* wouldn’t be able to enjoy the experience. Actually, chances are high you might be refused entry - which I find a good thing. Keeps out all the rif raf.

I am pretty sure from your post, you missed the best reason to go to the Dome. There is a bar on the 67th floor - the Sky Bar I think it is called - that is an extension of Sirocco Restaurant.

This bar has the most amazing views (helped by the fact that it is one of the few places in Bangkok that you cannot actually see the hideous Dome building). The bar serves pretty decent drinks and it is arguably the most romantic spot in Bangkok. Certainly, I have never met anyone who has failed to score after taking a chick there - unfortunately they dont offer a money back guarantee.

I am pretty sure you were in Distil - their kind of 'trendy chillout' bar/club (sounds like from the sofas anyway).

The restaurant located above Siroccos - Mezzluna - has a dress code which I failed (was forced to wear black chef's pants).

Incidentally, if you wonder where the crowd in V9 came from - they are mostly french. This is ok and a big improvement on Syn Bar which seems to have no customers at all.

PS. Your taste in drinks appears a little gay from your posts - is this something to do with the fact you were once a bar tender or do you simply have bad eyesight and need drinks that are easy to spot?

This has been penned down on my to-do list then.

Incidentally, so am I. Partially at least.

How very educated and scientifically founded to deduct somebody’s sexual orientation from the beverages he consumes. And if I were gay, would that be a big problem for you? Would it be any of your business for that matter?

I am not even going to dignify those remarks with any form of further response.

Abrak, only a little? LOL. Maybe he is very health conscious and is working hard from an early age at avoiding osteoporosis.

Actually hypershade, I don't think Abrak actually said you were gay. So why do you get so defensive? And lets be honest, you wouldn't expect to see Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson or Humphrey Bogart in a movie drinking Bailey's. Now Rock Hudson I wouldn't be surprised. Oh, btw, I like B52s.

Hey, Hypershade, ratch up your familiarity with colloquialisms... What Abrak said is that "your taste in drinks appears a little gay" - which does not, in any way, imply that you *are* gay. It's more a reference that your taste in drinks stands out as a little bit 'gauche', as opposed to what one is 'supposed' to drink.

In summary, though, I've always felt that people best drink the drinks they find to enjoy the taste of - not what society 'prescribes' as being correct. Personally, I don't see what's wrong with Bailey's, but then again, I don't drink much, myself.

Maybe Abrak could post a list of 'approved' drinks so that we can be sure not to mention any beverages that offend, or that raise suspsicion - it's important to know these things, you know

Maybe Abrak said what he said after he googled "gay drinks."

Try it: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gay+drinks&btnG=Google+Search

I just did it and the first link directs you to a discussion where Baileys is mentioned as a gay drink. Someone even says why: .....bailey's is a gay drink, not because gay guy's drink it but because it's so easy to swallow....

Really? Was Bailey's Irish Cream named after Ernest Hemingway? Nah, cannot be. You gotta be kidding.

In case you have doubts, yes, I am pulling your broken leg.

I once had a Babycham at Vertigo. It was simply divine. They refused me entry into the Dome because of my short skirt and tattoos.
