Has anyone ever stayed at the Le Meridian on Samui? It is my first time on the island and don't know what to expect. I am curious if the hotel is guest friendly? Do they have broadband? are they far from night time activities?

Le Meridien or Baan Taling Nam (as most people know it) is a great hotel but it is at least 30 minutes by car away from the action. I have no idea whether it is GF or not but you will feel pretty out of place with a local take away. I would definitely recommend bringing your own from Bangkok. If you look at a map of Samui you will see Taling Nam is at the SW of the island while Chaweng (the main drag) is at NEE. It is by far the best hotel on the island (and famous for honeymooners). Are you getting the picture? http://www.samuitourism.com/where_to_stay/samui_map.htm

Definitely not girl-friendly. Stayed there last year with my TGF for a few days. Despite naming her at booking time, checking in together & generally chatting to hotel staff, had quite a tough time getting her back into the hotel at 2am after at night in Chaweng. Kind of spoiled it for me. As Abrak says, definitely the best hotel on the island but took about 40 mins to get to the bars. One quiet days by the pool (great pool) and quiet evenings in the restaurant (nice restaurant too).

Just to clarify, do you mean that they won't accept guests, or that they give you a hard time and charge you extra? thanks,

Wingman checked into the hotel with his TGF when he arrived which is not how we would describe as a 'guest'. When he came back at 2am they assumed wrongly that he was bringing a 'guest'. I am pretty sure they have a no 'guest' in your room after 10pm policy. My advice (apart from bringing your own that you can check in at arrival) would be to book a room in Chaweng when you go out (it doesnt need to cost more than Bt800). Then you can spend the night there with your 'friend' and come back in the morning. An alternative is to ring the hotel and explain the situation. Many hotels will make an exception if you warn them in advance (Novotel in Phuket is a good example - they put a marker on your key ring).

I doubt enyone has stayed there cos it must have just opened!! (In fact are you sure it has opened) Location is about 5 minutes from the airport at the beginning of Chaweng Beach. Looks like it is going to be upmarket villas and if it is open you should get some good rates. Still if you were thinking of staying at Baan Taling Nam you probably are not looking to save money (and a brand new hotel is a big risk) Sounds like a corporate do in which case 'The Central Samui' is probably your best bet. If it is just a bunch of guys on the piss there are lots of places to choose from. If it is a smallish group (but including women or some guys looking for a quiet time) I would recommend Muang Kulaypan (GF). http://www.kulaypan.com
