I am thinking of including Chang Mai on my trip to LOS this year. Just wondering if anyone has any advise on the there and also how long do you reckon is worth staying in the city? I am thinking it might be nice to go there for 3/4 days and stay in the novotel which seems easily cheaper than BKK. Anybody got much experience with the place?

Wife & I covered quite a bit of CM in 4 days in early December. Went to the night market on the first night. Worth it. On the second day did a day tour out to the Doi Inthanon National Park. Take a warm top. It was surprisingly cold in the mountains. On the third day did a day tour to Golden Triangle. Take some extra baht to cover a trip across the Mekong to Laos (passport not required) and to see the Karen people. This is a very long day. Can recommend Journey Tours which we booked through our hotel but there are many other companies providing the same types of tours. On both these day tours you can see the village women actually making goods for sale and buy items off them. Cuts out the middle man and you know you are buying something authentic. There are some good half day tours around CM old city and up the local mountain to the summer palace and monestry. Stumbled into a flower and meat market somewhere in the old city. Meat market was a bit confronting. There are also one day treking/elephant ride/rafting tours available. Beware touts trying to offer you transport. Easy to get ripped off. Didn't get to try out the P4P scene for obvious reasons but with numerous massage parlours operating there has to be some offering extras. If you're after legitimate spa/massage there is quite a few high quality offerings at prices a lot lower than BKK and coastal LOS resorts. Great spot; enjoy.

Stayed in a nice hotel called Tapae Place last October, it comes up on a google search, good nice size clean double room, air con mini bar etc all for the grand price of 700thb. No breakfast but I think that was cheep anyway. Good position between Tapae Gate and the night market and walking distance to most of the bars. GF didn’t even ask for ID and the transfer to the airport was reasonable as well if I remember. Would recommend it no problems.
