Heebio--You said that the rooms at the Porn Ping towers were not worth the money. I'm curious--did you stay in the new wing or the old wing? I've stayed at the Porn Ping many times and always been happy with the new wing --which isn't all that new anymore, come to think of it--- but I was disappointed with the old wing the one time I got stuck there.

The last few times I stayed in Chiang Mai at the Royal Lanna...very nice, big room, great value for the money, good breakfast, and girl friendly. I'm also partial to the Night Market ocation, but I know it is a turn off for some people. To each his own!

Stayed at the RP almost every time I went to Chiang Mai. It's supposed to be one of the better hotels there. It's right next tot he night bazzar. Do not take the rooms facing the street, it's very noisy. Also one of their standard room ( I think they call it the superior) has no drawers at all inside the room. Quite inconvinient. Nice staff, pretty hostesses at the lobby. I also tried the Tamarind Hotel, a small boutique hotel on a quiet ground. Trouble is there were quite a few families with kids there and so it was noisy at times. Otherwise, better ambience than RP, IMHO. There have been some real fancy hotels just built recently. Mandarin Oriental is one of them. Very expensive but extrmely beautiful.

I'd stick with the Montri. Taxis are so cheap in that city I consider that location ideal. If you need something nicer, try Rydges.

Pirate, I've stayed at the Tawan Court Hotel a couple of times. A girlfriend booked it originally when I couldn't get anywhere else for love or money because I would be there over the Chinese New Year.
The next time I went, I thought why spend lots more for anywhere else? It was clean, comfortable and convenient, being only a few minutes stroll to the Night Market and from there not much further to the BG areas.
It's in a small cul de sac just across the road from the Porn Ping Tower Hotel. That little distance back from the busy road means that it's also quiet. Never had any problem with bringing back girls and at 600bt, where's the downside?

Tardisrider, I couldn't tell you which wing I stayed in as I was booked in by a Thai friend - it was facing towards the night bazaar though, if that helps. It was 1600 baht for a twin room with very small beds and just seemed to have seen better days. Great breakfast though.

The Royal Lanna was only 1300 baht and the room was seriously nice....like you said, great value for money. I'll be staying there next time I'm in Chiang Mai.

Passed a place near the group of small beer bars at the bottom of Loi Kroi - think it was called the Lanna Lodge... looked quite new and very nice. A google search has turned up nothing on this place however - anyone heard of this or got any info?

Hi Ramster. Just had a look at the Lanna Palace online - this isn't the same place. The hotel I passed was actually on Loi Kroh and was low rise with two separate wings and a nice garden in the centre - might actually be apartments but I've nothing else to go on. I'm pretty sure it was called the Lanna Lodge though.

Sorry, I don't have any info on the Lanna Palace.
