logistics is pretty easy, if you're taking the bus, just go to Ekamai station and ask for the bus to Bahn Pae, Rayong
from that bus station, you walk out to the piers and you can get a boat to the island

And for that time, you better have booked in advance. Just before, during and after Songkran, any place worth staying in on Koh Samet will be booked.

I will definitely book in advance if I can get my girl to settle on dates ahhhgggg! I think I will just book, and say 'coming or not?'....replacements generally not a problem and she knows it.

I think I stayed at samed villa last trip and was pleased for 1500 baht.
I took a taxi from bkk for like 2000baht and speed boat for 700baht...I dont know if you live over in thailand and on limited budget or not but for about 65 bucks it was so worth it to me not to deal with ekamai (like when I lived over there)..
I cant help but think about the following everytime samet comes up..its my first and only FR:

I was at Ko Samet earlier this week. First stayed at Samed Villa. It was nice though not as new as I thought it would be. The prices from accomodations are high when compared to the other islands in Thailand. Samed villa is next to the Silversand, which is THE party spot at night. A must do is dinner on the beach there. Then late at night the club music blasts. You can here it in bed at Samed Villa, so keep that in mind before booking. The place did not have the same beachfront room avaiable for my whole stay so I moved to another place. Glad I did as I found a super nice place for not much more. The Grand View Resort at the beach next to Where the Malabu is. The water is nice and actually is a beautiful coral reef loaded with clown fish, anemones and many bright corals. Definnitely worth renting a motorbike form transportation as the "taxis are overpriced. But the dirt roads are the worst condition I have ever been on. So many hole and cracks and valleys. The island is a nice secluded paradise. The choice to just relax witha girl.
