Hey there ! I am planning a trip to Koh Samui in April, I have read the posts, couple of questions:

1. I will be hanging out with my thai gf the whole time, so nightlife not a real concern. From what I've read Lamai is more laid back, nicer beaches, etc...

2. I will be going to Samui for Udon Thani. From my research, Bangkok Air is the only airline to fly right into Samui, but they do not go to Udon Thani ? Thai Air goes Udon Thani to somewhere near Samui but you then have to take a three hour bus/ferry ride? Gheez this trip will have a lot of travel !!!

3. Any hotel recommendations? Looking for something upscale but not too pricey...

4. Any advice on travelling to Udon Thani. I am actually going to Loei, looks to be 100 to 150 miles from Udon Thani, I was going to fly Bkk to UT and then take a bus, my tgf says just take bus from Bkk to Loei, same same travel time and cheaper

Any advice is greatly appreciated !

- my advice for accomodation for Samui, would be where I have stayed 3 times before, on Chaweng Beach -

I would highly recommend the bungalows at 'Long Beach Lodge' - prices start at 1800 bht per night.
Well worth it, as they are all detached, and spacious...well away from the road..yet close enough to all the bars, restaurants and nightlife.

I only visited Lamai for 1 day....nice, but for me way too quiet...even for me...and I sometimes like quiet resorts...but take a trip down, and see for yourself...

Oldtimer has been in and around the Kingdom for nearly four decades but never visited Samui.

As Phuket is getting a bit too upmarket for my taste, I am thinking of moving to a new villa destination.

What I would want is a beautiful beach within striking distance of some laid back night life, and preferably a good pub close by. Anything like that on Samui?

Oh yes, watching the sun go down is an important occupation (thus forget Hua Hin).

zipster, I think you could fly to Surat Thani (not sure if they are flights from Udon though) and then take a ferry to Samui, which is about 1 hour or so. I have done that but in the reverse direction (Samui -> Surat Thani -> BKK).

Hey Zippy, it's you again...

Been at Lamai for a 1 week vacation. Quite nice and perfectly mid-size for me...

Been at the Lamai Beach View Resort and liked it. North (Chaweng) end of Lamai beach on a small hill. Slightly off the Lamai main street area, which is good. Small to mid scale resort but with very good (German/Thai) management, very friendly staff and excellent view on Lamai bay, beach and sunset (Hi Oldtimer, enjoy) from almost all of their cottages.

Don't mix it up with the Lamai Beach View Best Western Hotel which is twice as expensive and half as nice...

In all seriousness go to BALI, cheaper prices, amazing sunsets (and sunrises), girls far less mercenary in their attitudes, plenty of nice bars, and far more culturally stimulating activities there if you like that kind of thing.

This doesn't make sense.

Lamai Beach is on the East Cost of Samui. The sun sets in the West.

Was it the sunrise then

Nah, doesn't make sense, I haven't seen the sunrise for years, not my time of the day...

I guess I got it: the Chaweng end of the Lamai beach on the eastern coast of Samui is kind of northish (sp?, English?) and if you then look a little bit around the corner of your cottage terrace you kind of see the sunset…

Pretty nice piece of Thai logic isn’t it? Yesss, I’m settled in finally…
