Broken Leg

another thing....

since you're so familiar with the place could anyone tell me if there are equals in samui of places like Banana, Tiger, Tai Pan or Safari in Patong? Closing time?

last time I was in Patong there was that famous and unpopular strike which really pissed me off; looks to me that clubs tend to close soneer and sooner every year.

is it the King trying to close down on prostitution or just my luck?

Broken Leg, I do like walking from the beach to my hotel and restaurants, but I a pussy addict as well, I'm looking for a bit of a compromise here. By other places other than Chaweng you mean Lamai or...?

I was thinking more around big buddha area or my all time favourite maenam beach which is f***ing beautiful. However you would need a bike to pick up coz the pickings are extremely slim there and anyway I would agree with the others if you're a pussy addict samui does not have the best selection of lookers. In june there's hardly any backpacker chicks either. But you could of course still have a fine time.

Alistair,

Rather like you I am a freelancer kind of guy and a big fan of Banana, Tiger and Taipan. I even agree with your comment (or was it someone else) that these places are better than their equivalent in Bangkok.

Opening hours are much longer in Patong post election. Taipan was telling me that they close every night now at 4.00am. (At the low point six months ago, everywhere was closing at 1.00am).

Samui has one place that is a near equivalent - namely Green Mango. But Green Mango has far more farangs (and many couples). I would say that the freelancers (pretty skanky at that) are actually out numbered by available punters by close to 2:1 while in the aforementioned Patong freelance joints the ratio is 3 freelancers to every 1 punter. To the best of my knowledge closing time at Green Mango is at 2.00am (although I havent been there for a month or so).

There is one other place - The Reggae Bar - which usually has a few freelancers. In reality, if you are on the pick up, Samui is really a beer bar place (as mentioned). There are plenty of beer bars around and I guess the standard is not that much below the beer bars in Patong.

Bloody hell, Abrak, these are the kind of answers which I look for, comparisons. Thanks a lot.
What you say is really discouraging. We certainly seem to have the fun-package thing in common, I mean, go-to-the-bar-and-take-your-pick-then-go-to-the-room doesn't cover our idea of fun, does it? A good club like Banana, Tiger or other with the same atmosphere usually does the trick.
You saying that girls are outnumbered by punters in samui's clubs will make me miss Patong, but I'm a resorceful bloke, I'll find my way. The sea in Phuket in June is just too awful to make me change my mind. Compromises sometimes are the way.

I would add to Abrak's stuff that if you are visiting samui in june it's quiet not many punters so there is less competition for girls.

Alistair,

There is a fairly simple solution to your problem. Buy a one way ticket to Samui (price Bt3700), a one way ticket from Samui to Phuket (Bt1400) and then a one way ticket from Phuket to Bangkok (Bt1200-Bt2600). Note the total cost will be roughly the same as a Bangkok-Samui return (Bt7400).

You can checkout Samui and if, at any stage you dont like it you can head off to Phuket. If you like Samui, your only inconvenience will be a return flight to Bangkok via Phuket - an hour or two extra travel at the most.

I've lived in both places, Phuket and Samui, and I'd say generally Samui is more expensive...though it's a few years since I've been there. I also find the locals far more difficult to deal with than any other place in Thailand.

If anything, Yurune's comment about Samui is even more appropriate now.

In February, the place was overrun by Eurotrash (no hate mail, please, you know who you are) Andaman refugees, the local Thais were even MORE obnoxious than usual, and prices were up 30% or more from my last visit (admittedly 2 years ago).

All this should be tempered by the knowledge that I generally don't like Chaweng, prefer Lamai, and actually like Nathon best over all. And I agree with the poster about Maenam: the prettiest of all the accessible places on Samui.

In fact, Nathon has quite a few new small hotels that were aggressively competing for business, with excellent rates and decent accommodations. There is a nice night market, a selection of massage places, and all the basic necessities for DAYTIME activities.

The Seaside Palace hotel, while a bit shabby, has a great location, and the dubious distinction of a first-class whorehouse RIGHT NEXT DOOR.

Well, OK, maybe not first-class, but certainly servicable. You will need some Thai language skills, of course, and a strong stomach...

For regular Farang-accustomed freelancers, Lamai is the spot.

As for the Bangkok Airways monopoly, those who don't require the immediate gratification of "fly-in, check-in, get laid in 5 minutes" can have a rewarding experience taking a train to Suratthani, and a ferry to Samui, for a fraction of the cost. There are MANY opportunities for those who actually LIKE Thailand, and can appreciate the part of the country that exists OUTSIDE of the bar...

All that said, I won't be going back that way. It's 5 years too late for Samui. But I WILL go back to the South coast. It's still waiting to happen...

BTW, to put my Eurotrash comment in perspective, one comment from Michael, a German (non-trash) I met along the coast: "I'm happy about the current American situation. We Germans used to be the assholes of the world; now, it's YOUR turn!"

I like that. Michael will be a lifelong friend.

Interesting comment. Can you be more specific, east or west coast, presumably not in the southern muslim dominated provinces?

That's 'Mr. Asshole', to you...

Mr. La Rue (formerly ?),

As for my comment about the South coast, I was referring to the Gulf coast, from Hua Hin south to Chumporn, even Nakhon Si Thammarat. I have yet to see much south of there, and am still a bit intimidated by 'pasa dty'.

Gotta love folks who start of their conversation with "yet mae, sawatdee krap", basically, "Motherf***er, how ya doin'"... Kinda reminds me of time spent working in Compton, CA...

I really like the deserted areas from Prachuap south, and have a couple of 'undiscovered' spots I hope will stay that way.

If I had the means, currently, I would probably shack up near Hua Hin. I love the beach, and yet, all the amenities are available there. It's a bit expensive, due to the tourist influx (damn Euros... ), but a really nice place, within striking distance of some REALLY nice places...

Just don't drink the crushed-ice cooled drinks on the 3rd class train. (Hint: the 3rd class train is the ONLY train to the good spots...)

best,
hs
