Hello,
Just to add few points here. Human wastes are freely poured in the water of Koh samui 290 tons daily .
In pattaya it is more, I don't have the figure , but definitely it is more than Koh Samui.
Story is same in bangkok river as well.

Be that as it may Samui, an island after all, does not have the pollution problems in its waters that Pattaya, a bay, has.
Probably the sewage tends to just sit offshore at Pattaya while at Samui the smaller amount of waste gets washed away in the current of the Gulf of Siam.
Pattaya's a tub of hepatitis, Samui as far as I know, and for whatever reason -- isn't.

BigD, my understanding is yes, Pattaya has done, but, it will be some time before this cleanup has been effective enough to safely resume recreational swimming close to shore. Moral: if you really want to stay on Eastern Seabord, pass Pattaya and go to Jomtien or Sri Racha or further toward Cambodia.
Further out like Samet, no water problem, just falciparum malaria, which will kill you faster than hep. I'm a real spoilsport.

They did indeed install one and it promptly failed shortly thereafter, upon which they resumed pumping into the sea. I think it has since been fixed but of course CJ is correct in stating that it will take a while before it is effective.
