Sai Kaeo, Ao Hin Knok, Ao Phai and Ao Thap Thim are on the east coast and that is where there is an abundance of restaurants, beach BBQ places, fireshows, shops, internet places and the like. You can walk between these 4 beaches and there is very little seperating them, they almost seem like one beach. I would say it is about 2km from the north part of Sai Kaeo Beach to the south part of Ao Phai, and then Ao Thap Thim is just around the corner. There is no path along the beach south of Ao Thap Thim.
My favorite beach BBQ is Jep's which is on Ao Hin Knok. Lots of open-air bars along the first three beaches I mentioned above. Great fun sitting on mats, drinking and looking at the stars. And of course, the back room of the Bob Marley Karaoke Bar is not to be missed.
Ao Phrao (Ao Prao) is on the west coast, isolated from the main beach areas of Sai Kaeo, etc. There is a nice resort there and the beach is quiet. Too quiet for me. Only one or two restaurant choices. No nightlife.
It is worth mentioning here that Ko Samed is much, much busier on weekends. You will have life much easier and better if you go during the week, trust me.

I think the hotel CG posted above is nice for the money as it is the only hotel I've found on this island with a safe in the room. However I also agree with the other post that the location is so so. I think the hotel next door looked really good and cheaper, but no safe. It was called Silversand and the location still is so so.
This resort was spoken about by LKOL and it looks good, only problem for me is it's further away from the main town then the last resort:

Hey guys,
Does anyone have an idea about how many baht it is to take a taxi from sukhumvit to rayong???
or a taxi ride from Pattaya to rayong?????
as I would like to make a 1 night detour 
I am thinking I dont want to mess around with ekami or pattaya bus stations!!!

To got to Koh Samet, you first go to the town of Ban Phe, not the town of Rayong.
You will likely get a taxi to go to Ban Phe from Pattaya for about 800-1000 baht. Negotiate.
From Bangkok to Ban Phe will probably be about 2000-3000. Again, negotiate.

I've used BKK taxi from hotel in Sukhumvit area right to the pier in Ban Phe. Fare was 2200 B. The driver was not familiar with Rayong or Ban Phe. We had to ask ocal people for direction in that area. No big deal, just allow extra time for boat connection.
In the return trip, I hire a private car ( an old car showed up ) at the pier of Ban Phe. Paid 2000 B to get back to BKK.
Since taxi price from BKK to Pattaya is around 1200 B, so I figure 2000-2500 B to Ban Phe is reasonable.
As I try to fit in a trip to Koh Chang in my next LOS visit, I found transprotation from BKK to Koh Samet is much more convenient than to Koh Chang.

express bus from ekamai to pier at phe 170 baht each way and fast at 3 - 3:30 time on bus. the boats going over several times per hour at 40 minte ride.
very quiet bring your own the best way to enjoy company

We were on our way to the bus station in BKK in a taxi to go there. My bodyguard was talking to the taxi driver telling the driver where we were going. Next thing I know she says taxi know the way, bt1800. It was the same price back with a different taxi. This was last April.

to save about 45 minutes of transit
cause it's not gonna be that much quicker of a transit in a taxi
ok, so you are in airconditioning the whole way, that's an advantage
you don't even really need to take a taxi to the bus station, as there's a BTS station right in front of it

Last week, suk to ban phe by taxi: 1700 baht. Public bus would've been fine for me, but my BYOTGF insisted on a taxi (it's that face-thing). Knowledgable & thrustwurthy driver. Recommended.
