I stayed at the Rydges Tapae Gate last weekend. Pretty decent all up. Close enough to walk to just about anywhere, without being in too busy an area. Lots of great little cafes around.
I paid US$40 a night on http://www.asiahotels.com.
Word of caution though. The inroom directory makes a point of mentioning that there is a joiner fee of 600 baht because they try to discourage it.
Maybe not a place if you're looking to monger, but a good place to take the tirac for a romantic weekend.

I agree that Chiang Mai is not the best place for mongering, third rate bars and third rate girls, I went there for three days and flew out within 24 hours.

Doing something a bit different for the 40th birthday this year. Flying up to Chiang Mai since I've never been and I'm looking for a nice hotel. Does not matter if it is girl friendly because she will be checking in with me and staying the entire trip. I'm looking for nice! Maybe something with a big tub since I've introduced her to bubble baths and after much coercion she will actually let me join in. Why are Thai girls so shy?  Can you brothers recommend a very nice hotel with big clean rooms between say $50-$75?

Stayed at the Galare Guest House when we were there a couple weeks ago, A fanatastic place 750 baht a night no joiner fee, Splendid people, check it out if you like

as a thought on hotels CM,
I stayed at the Chiang inn near the night market, has a secret door round the back,no walk of shame as it comes out right next to the lift.I think most of the girls know about this as saw two come in while I waited for the lift. good breakfast too.

Just finished staying for 2 weeks at the Amora Rydges. Great hotel. 1100 Baht night/double off the net. Only 20Baht to the night markets by red taxi. 40Baht tuk-tuk.
Sunday market 3 minute walk. Great/friendly staff. Read the 600 Baht guest policy but was never charged it and had a few. They even went to breakfast with me. Would recommend as a very good hotel. Many couples and locals there.

Pity. It seems that the room is available for $29/night from Precision Reservations, as of the date of this post.
