Samui opens airport to international flights
================================

Samui Airport's new 500-million-baht passenger terminal was opened for international flights yesterday after starting domestic air services on May 27. Yesterday's opening means the airport is now running at full capacity, which is basically four times larger than the old terminal and capable of handling up to 16,000 passengers a day.

The full opening comes in light of continued debates and lobbying by politicians to have a second airport on the resort island funded with taxpayer money to support the country's burgeoning tourism industry.

Bangkok Airways, which operates the Samui airport, has been the focus of continued criticism for its monopoly on domestic air services to the resort island in the Gulf of Thailand. Critics have blasted the high passenger fares and aircraft service charges, as well as its reluctance to allow other domestic carriers to use its airport.

The airline categorically denies all these charges, saying it has played a key role in putting the once-little-known island on the world's tourism map since it first opened the airport in 1989.

The new Samui terminal comprises a cluster of low-rise buildings with steel-reinforced thatched roofs, palm-tree pillars and wooden and rattan walls in an open-air layout that blends in with the coconut plantations that surround it. The airport has four new domestic sections and two international sections with a total passenger area of 73,000 sq metres.

The development also includes a ''walking street'' retail area adjacent to the passenger terminal with boutique-style shops lining the path. The company also plans to build a 60-room boutique hotel early next year.

The new terminal development, scheduled for an official opening in January next year, will cope with surging foreign-tourist traffic to the island over the next 10 years and immediately ease congestion at the old terminal.

Passenger arrivals at the Samui airport have increased from 660,000 in 2000 to 1.3 million last year. It serves direct Bangkok Airways' flights from Bangkok, Phuket, U-Tapao, Chiang Mai, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Next year, the airport will see more arrivals as Bangkok Airways expands regional connections, airline executives said yesterday.

Other airlines heading to Samui include Berjaya Air from Kuala Lumpur and budget airline FireFly from Penang.

Samui's over.

In five years, it has gone from nice to Honolulu-esque, and will serve as an example of the worst land-use management of Thailand's 21st century.

Sad, I once loved the place.

Floods hit tourist island of Samui
========================

Surat Thani – The southern provinces of Surat Thani and Chumphon have been hit by flood, and the flood situation on the tourist island of Samui remains worrisome.

Beachfront roads at Chawang Beach and nearby commercial areas have been submerged under one metre of water, while a portion of the ring roads encircling the island are also covered by a 30 cm flood.

In a village in Phrasaeng district, floodwater is two metres deep and in Don Sak district, the district chief said that officials have opened sluice gates to drain water into the sea to prevent further flooding.

The governor asserted that releasing water from the waterways won't affect villagers downstream who expressed concern about possible overflowing water.

Tourists stranded on Samui, flights grounded
=================================

More than 1,000 tourists were left stranded at Samui airport yesterday as torrential rain battered the resort island and other parts of the South.

The bad weather grounded planes on Koh Samui and at Surat Thani airport on the mainland.

Tourists and local residents struggled to return to hotels and homes along roads submerged under deep floodwater.

The air force was called in to help.

''We had to use our six-wheel trucks to help them. Otherwise they could not have returned to their hotels and homes on such flooded roads,'' said Flight Lieutenant Surapong Sarakul.

Surat Thani governor Winai Buapradit declared six tambons and 11 villages on the island disaster zones.

Soldiers were assigned to help people carry their belongings out of flooded areas.

Samui airport was turned into a temporary shelter for stranded tourists as Bangkok Airways, which has a monopoly on all flights in and out of Samui airport, cancelled all its 72 flights yesterday because of the weather.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 29 January 2008 :-

Samui airport to become second international flight hub
========================================

Bangkok Airways, the country's largest privately owned carrier, plans to turn Samui Airport into a second international air hub after Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport in the next one or two years.

The airline would launch more direct international flights for medium-haul routes through the small resort airport. The plan falls under Bangkok Airways' growth plan and the mandate of the Samui Property Fund.

Also in the pipeline are plans to offer direct flights from Samui to Dubai, Shanghai, Bali, and Kuala Lumpur. The airline already has scheduled flights to Hong Kong and Singapore.

Being instrumental to the launch of the direct international flights from Samui is the arrival this year of additional A319s boost capacity for the longer flights, said Bangkok Airways vice-president M.L. Nandhika Varavan.

The first of the six A319s that Bangkok Airways has ordered is already operating, while three more are due for delivery this year with the rest gradually joining the fleet until Nov 2009.

''The definite launching dates of these international flights has yet to be decided, but are unlikely in the very near future,'' M.L. Nandhika said. That depends on the four-year marketing plan Bangkok Airways is finalising, she added.

The bulk of Bangkok Airways' flights originate from Suvarnabhumi and a substantial number of its passenger traffic is between Bangkok and Samui. Bangkok Airways carries about 600,000 passengers a year through Samui Airport.

With a limited number of international flights, Samui Airport is largely classified as a domestic airport, flying mostly foreign tourists from Bangkok to Samui.Aside from Bangkok Airways' own international-bound services, Samui serves a handful of international flights from Malaysia by the low cost carrier Firefly and Selangor-based Berjaya Air.

Part of the problem is environmental restrictions on the number of flights and operating hours, with a total of 36 flights per day currently allowed.

But Bangkok Airways is eager to make Samui Airport its second traffic base to support the airport's new 500-million-baht passenger terminal that was completed early last year.

The new terminal is four times larger than the old one and can handle 16,000 passengers a day. It is intended to cope with surging foreign tourist traffic to the island over the next 10-years.

Meanwhile, air traffic through Samui last year slowed from the previous year.

According to the Department of Civil Aviation, total passenger throughput dropped 15.71% to 1.18 million from 1.40 million in the previous year while combined aircraft movements also fell 15.87% to 15,783.
