Siaw Kaew beach resort gets a lot of positive feedback and I'm staying there in a few weeks - deluxe cottage 3500 baht p/night (kids under 12 free)

Apparently there's no P4p scence on the island at all - no temptations just chill out

I highly, highly recommend Samed Villa.

http://www.samedvilla.com

Great, new rooms on a good beach, walking to all the restaurants, bars, etc. Book ahead, they are usually fully occupied.

Another place is Saikaew Beach Resort, but I much prefer Samed Villa.

There is no p4p scene on Koh Samed, that I saw.

I also took Dew there last October, but I did not write a Field Report. I love this island, maybe I'll bring Mist there for a few days in late-March.

I love Koh Samet as well. I recommend the Sai Kaew Beach area as well. Had bad experience at Malibu, so would avoid that place.

CG and Nick:

I plan on being out there on Koh Samet the last week in March (e.g., 25-29), if you guys are around maybe drop a note here on this thread or IM if you want to get a beer one night. CG, always enjoy your reports, wouldn't mind hearing a few in person. First round's on me.

I am not sure where I am staying, but was thinking of trying the west side (Ao Prao) of the island for once.

I have been over to Ao Prao for the day, it is quite isolated (maybe you like that). It is a nice resort, and I used their beach and chairs with no one saying a word to me about it. I would be bored there for more than a day. But that is me.

Thanks for the invite, Judge. I am unsure of whereabouts in late March, maybe Thailand, maybe not. I already have mid-March plans for attending an "upcounty wedding" with Dew so I don't know how much free time I will have. If I am in Samed, I will hook up with you for sure.

I just got back from there and confirm that I didn't see any P4P scene. I stayed at Tubtim which is a close walk over to Silver Beach (forget the thai name) and would recommend that if you can get a bungalow in the front row. I think they went for about 1200-1500 baht (but I was in 3rd row back so price might be a bit higher). On silver beach there is a disco and lots of sit-on-mats on the beach style restaurants - really nice. Kind of reminded me of Phi Phi island (where Hippie Bar and Karma bar used to be). Have fun, nice laid back place with some good waves rolling in on the beach.

I thought the taxis were a little spendy at 200 or so depending where you wanted to go. From the pier you can take the taxi into the park with 10 people and pay 30 baht each, but once in if you want to go somewhere they are hawks. Get a scooter if you can, they run about 400 per day if you get them in the park, but cheaper if you take one at the pier before entering the park (was quoted 500 for 2 days). Don't forget you have to pay to get into the park too, 200 baht for farangs, 20 for thais.

By the way, I found that walk in prices were cheaper than booking in advance if you aren't too worried about looking around a little bit, but of course availability is an issue.

Cheers, Hank

another reason NOT to go

always thought it was so rude, even at the national boxing stadium they charge more for Falahng

some parks or zoos have 3 separate prices, Thai cheapest, another for Asians (usually double or triple), then another for Westerners (can be as much as 10x)

f*** THAT ! !

I agree a 180 baht surcharge for farang is unfair (and this thread is not the place to argue about it, but I don't think it is a reason to give Samed a skip.

OK, if you are really against paying this charge and want to avoid it, (and have only a backpack you can carry), here is how.

As you walk towards Saikaew Beach from the pier, you will go up a hill. Then, as you walk down the hill, you will see a small road on your left. I believe is it just past the health clinic. Walk left down that road, it will eventually turn right and end up at Saikaew Beach Resort. This totally bypasses the place you pay for the permit.

If you see the 7/11 on your right, you have gone too far and missed the road on the left.

If you are going to Saikaew Beach, this is not even longer than going in the main entrance.

During your stay, you can still come in and out at the main entrance, they only collect the fee from people who are abviously just arriving (and have luggage).

Saikaew Beach Resort, IMHO probably the second nicest hotel on the island other than the super expensive Le Vittamen (I think that's spelt right). Beware there are 2 Saikaews, Saikaew and Saikaew Beach. If you go there ask them to eat at Ban Ploy, best restaraunt I've eaten in Thailand yet. It's on the water so you need to take this boat which they have on some kind of electronic pulley system. Also from Saikaew to the restaurant it was a 300 baht cab ride in the back of a truck. WTF. That's alright, cause the food is superb IMHO.

Gentlemen,
Does anyone have an update on Koh Samet & accomm there? Also logisitics of transfer from Asoke, where we will be staying from 9/4.
I am thinking about three nights there (is three a good stay there, or would you stay longer?) with my best girl from BKK, we may have her son with us.
I want to drink some wine, take some walks, have a nice meal, here or there...and a bit of music would be nice...so romantic 555555!
This could be 11-14/4 so Song Kran considerations come into it I guess.
Samed Villa looks fine, any other suggestions?
Your ideas appreciated.
Cheers,
Liam
