When I come out of the water in Patong (Phuket), I get out of the beach and have the choice between: shagging, shopping, eating, drinking or going back to the hotel, ALL AT A WALKIN DISTANCE. Do I have the same in Chaweng (Koh Samui) or am I better off renting a motorbike?
A decent place in the 1000bath range in June close to what I mentioned?
Generally speaking, is Samui dearer than Phuket? (eating, stalls, etc.)

( ( (i understand that many people go to samui instead of phuket at the moment, I also understand that the only domestic flight to samui is via bangkok airways, but aren't they a bit bloody steep? more than 7000bath for a flight to samui when you could have a flight to phuket for a fifth of that price?) ) )

This forum is real good.

Yes, more or less the same possibilities. Depends on your span of interests. But if you like to venture out to waterfalls, Lamai Beach or Nathon Town, then a motorcycle is absolute required.

A OK hotel is Samui Park Resort at Lamai Beach. Should be that price.

Samui is not pricier than Phuket.

Bloody steep for an airticket to Samui? No, it's called monopoly. As the airport is owned by Bangkok Airways, they are the only ones to fly on Samui. While the competion to Phuket is high (Nokair, Thai Airways etc).

I've lived in both places, Phuket and Samui, and I'd say generally Samui is more expensive...though it's a few years since I've been there. I also find the locals far more difficult to deal with than any other place in Thailand.

Alistair,

In some respects Samui is even easier for getting off the beach and eating, shopping etc.. Chaweng beach is much much nicer than Patong. Prices for Chaweng are about the same as Phuket. Elsewhere on Samui is cheaper.

The biggest problem you will face is that it is well known that the Samui hookers/freelancers are the oldest and ugliest in Thailand. There are virtually no proper go-go bars (one in Soi Green Mango) and the punters tend to out number the hookers 2:1. It is best to bring your own but that will clearly add to the cost of a very expensive flight.

If you dont believe me - please see note 5. of this survey.

I spent about a week in Samui in Dec and would have to agree with the general assessment of Yurune.

Wouldn't agree 100% with Abrak that you need to bring your own - but would say finding that diamond takes a bit more effort. There are 3 gogo's from memory in Soi Green Mango. If you are a gogo dog you won't like the place much I would guess, more for a beerbar person.

You will definitely need some form of transport if you like exploring (taxi's are bloody expensive). Samui is the only place in Thailand (that I've been to) that I felt safe enough (from other road users) to ride a bike. In saying that, Samui also has the highest motorbike accidents in Thailand. I suspect however that the large percentage would involve people who have never ridden motorbikes before and maybe some alcohol involved.

Whilst Chaweng may be much nicer than patong as Abrak points out, it's still a bit of a shithole, if you decide on samui there are so many nice places to stay outside chaweng where you can walk from the beach to your hotel to restaurants.

I am mostly into freelancers you usually find in discos and clubs, and butterrflying is my hobby, and if the survey is correct, Abrak, I will have to think about changing place. Anyone else of the same opinion of that survey? Scary...
The thing is that I've been to Patong 4 times and I'd like a change, besides I'll take time off in June and the sea in Phuket that month is disturbingly rough. Don't like swimming pools.
Still deciding, though.

another thing....

since you're so familiar with the place could anyone tell me if there are equals in samui of places like Banana, Tiger, Tai Pan or Safari in Patong? Closing time?

last time I was in Patong there was that famous and unpopular strike which really pissed me off; looks to me that clubs tend to close soneer and sooner every year.

is it the King trying to close down on prostitution or just my luck?

Broken Leg, I do like walking from the beach to my hotel and restaurants, but I a pussy addict as well, I'm looking for a bit of a compromise here. By other places other than Chaweng you mean Lamai or...?
