Hello,
I found lots of usefull informations on this forum about Thailand, thanx to all of you for that.
In February I'll be going to Khorat, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and plan to continue to Vientiane after that.
Do you have any informations about Vientiane (any specific soys or bars for adult entertainment?), maybe also the places in southern Lao?
And what about the stupid, old law, which says that foreigners and Lao women aren't allowed to have sex with each other, except they're married? Do the Lao policemen just wait on an occasion to bust a tourist and thru that make a littler extra sallary?
Are there any places, which I shouldn't miss on my from BKK through the northern Isan to Vientiane, and from there through southern Lao back to Thailand ( probably Ubon, before I return to BKK) ?
Thanx in advance, will share my experiences after I return in the middle of March.

I went up there for a Visa run a few months back. Vientiane closes early, about 11 PM. There are some nice french restaurants around the fountain in the middle of town. Supposedly La'Opera is the best, but they were the only restaurant that didn't post a menu outside so I went next door. Also some less formal seafood restaurants along the river.
There were some girls on the street that asked to go with me, on one occasion a policeman was standing right there (there seems to be one every few blocks, some carrying semi-automatic weapons). I also know about 'The Law", so just passed. Don't know if it's enforced in Vientiane, but I've heard of a young backpacker who had to marry a girl up-country to get out of jail.
BeerLao is excellent, much better than thai beer, IMHO, and also try the coffee there. Lots of delicious french pastries, too.
Take lots of 20 baht notes to avoid getting tons of Lao currency as change. They accept dollars, baht, or local currency (forget the name).
Take some US dollars with you to save on your Lao Visa, since they will accept either $30 USD or 1500 baht, good for a 2 week stay. If you're going for a Thai Visa, get to the embassy in the morning, and you can pickup your Visa the next afternoon. I wouldn't trust the visa services that promise to deliver it to your hotel. No way I'm leaving my passport without a receipt from the thai embassy, what guarantee is there it won't be sold on the black market?
Accomodations are slightly more expensive than Thailand for the same class of service. I'd recommend staying at the Pantawee Hotel in Nong Khai, on the Thai side of the river, has a computer in every room with broadband for 600-750 baht, a far better deal than you'll find in Vientiane. Street immediately to the east has a decent expat bar.
If you want p4p, I think best to stay in Udon, but only spent 2 days in Vientiane. Hope you enjoy the trip.

Re Vientiane.
Agree with with last post: take plenty 20 baht notes = 7000 laos KIP. can get you a plate or rice with asstd meats or laos rice noodles (sin jai) excellent. The laos resteraunts near tHe Laos paris hotels are better than those mekhong side if you want real laos foor. howevr the outdoor resteraunts on the riverside are good but mozzy heaven. Try the barbecue at table (moo ka ta) 600 thb per head.
there are a couple of discos where p4p ia available, you will have to take a tuk tuk. agree price b4 you go and DONT indulge in any illegal stuff they offer. (90% sell drugs)
There is a laos niteclub with p4p near the mekhong with loads of beautiful but young girls. go to go 1000 thb lt. st rooms available as some hotels will not allow girls in.
never had probs with it myself though, Ive stayed at a few hotels and guest houses too. I cant remember any of the hotel names!!! I let my lgf take care of it. if I can provide any further info. let me know

Definetely will bring USD and THB, seems to be the same game as in Cambodia.
Maybe a 2, or 3 days are enaugh for that place anyway. Isn't it strange, that, as I read and heard, in Thailand close to the laotian border a lot of the action seems to be provided by Lao women, while in their country itself, it seems to be rather quiet in this concern?
Cambodia is different. You can't compare places to BKK, or Pattaya ( the capitol Pnom Penh comes closest ), but at least there's plenty of action everywhere. The motorcicle drivers offer their help (so much, that in some places they really get on your balls) and they can show you a bib variity in everytown (not in the tiny villages of course, although I'm sure that even in those places, or at least not to far away you can find company ).
How about southern citiy in Lao like Savannaketh, or Pakse f.e.?
Any recommodations for guest friendly hotels, or guesthouses in Udon ( some place called "australian something"m, I forgot?)

ps. nong khai you will need to bring a photo for your visa and I think it is $32 all in for laos visa.
around 6pm many p4p freelancers cruise m.bike up and down the road alongside mekhong. they often slow down and smille but wont say they are p4p. just say hello and ask them where they are going? Often they will stop and pull up for a chat outside the Familymart shop. or the carpark opposite. they play coy but that is just how it is in VTNE.
also there is a well known bar with a pool table and philipino pop group (cant remember the name!!!) one soi over parrelel to the riverside rd. Many p4p fl but much older, most of these gals speak excellent english and can play a fair game of pool too.
