I am going down to Samui for a few days and want to hire a jeep. I have hired bikes in Pattaya before and had no problem but do I need a drivers licence to hire a car? Also what would be the cost per day?

I rented a jeep a few years back on Samui. It was great fun and I was able to explore the interior of the island as well as drive the entire coast. All that was required at the time was my driver's license from home. It's been a few years so my memory may be off - but I think that we paid 1200 baht for 24 hours...

For the past two years I have hired a jeep to see the island.
I told hotel reception and they sorted everything, no licence, no paperwork, said if anything happened I just had to pay 5000 max. Presumably even death!
Cost 800 per day.
Most people on Samui do not wear crash helmets whilst bombing around on their Honda waveriders.

I rented a jeep on all my monthly trips to samui for work.
I rented from a thai guy named Tom (nickname) and paid 700 baht a day but that was his special because I used him exsclusivley (sp?)
dont worry about drivers permit I dont remember ever being asked and I had one.
You should expect to get a good jeep for about 900 baht a day.
have fun, and try and check out other areas beside Chuwang. Its fun but other areas are worth checking out.

I want to see the whole island and getting to old for bikes so thats the reason we will hire a jeep. We have booked Sandalwood villas. Any feed back on this place?

Though you can rent with only your home drivers license. You do need an international driver's license. If you live in the US call your local AAA and you can get one that day.
It's one of those things they can F with you for not having one. I paid I think $10 for mine and it's just a verification that your home Driver's license is real. If you do not have AAA access do a google search with international Driver's license and there are plenty of companies willing to overcharge you for their services.
I got one for pice of mind.
