May I recommend you find a new friend?
Joking  ,,, I cannot say I ever had trouble finding a GF hotel anywhere in Thailand,,,,,, assuming your friend cannot speak any Thai the best bet if no-one can help is to tell him get a taxi or TUK TUK ( with an English speaking? driver) and ask the driver,,,they know everything and for a few Baht more the driver will probably organise the girl / girls also.
( Most taxi drivers will understand I want Hotel, I want hotel can boom boom etc)

Yeah well he is a bit naive. I think that comes from being born with a silver spoon in one's mouth ?
Never had to find out for himself. I would have thought any hotel that is not part of a chain or in the luxury department shouldn't be a problem?

I have walked around and asked up front before checking in  It worked for me.

First time in Phuket all the agents booked us in 4-5 star rooms and not GF at all 500 THB. I changed 3 times the promise me no extra money. And every night the same bloody story pay and Id card. I got fed up and got my money back and walked around looking for myself and asked just that. Can I take a girl to the room? I took a room in Bel Air beucase the owner was so funny.
