I am these days a frequent visitor to Udon for hrmmm... private reasons! And even some business actually! I must say that this totally different scene has come to attract me and the easy more laidback life. I enjoy myself and I will be back many times! Prices are unbelievable if you for instance compare with BKK. Picked up my laundry today - a full heavy bag - at 200 B!
I have found a real gem that I hereby pass on to other broīs about to to visit this old GI town (during Vietnam war). It is a tiny hotel located on a small relaxed backstreet near the shopping center. Itīs name is Irish Clock and has just recently been taken over by a really nice serviceminded english gentleman named Steve. His wife Mali is among the best cooks I ever met in Thailand - not only that she is great on Thai food - for your GF - but she performs absolutely fantastic also with western grub! My chin fell to the floor when she presented an applepie with custard - just the way I like it.... and I am not even english!!
Steve and Mali has just taken over this place and that was good - because it was not well handled before them. Now you have an excellent room for just 850 per night and the internet is working well in the lower region. Within a week or so he told me it will be ok in all the rooms! Not so many BTW - only 7 - but it gives a homy feeling and the bar is comfy and very nice to "hang" in!
All in all - go there for your accomodation or just drop in for a very nice meal or a few pints of Guiness or John Smiths! I have Steveīs email and phone no if you post me! I am very happy to give this little gem my highest recommendation!

Sorry late reply. The nightlife in Udon can be summarised as very different and low-key compared to BKK or PTTY for instance. BUT there is small places to be found - mainly across the shopping complex on a small backstreet that really is "small" --- BUT I have also seen some ok faces there - and one at a time is good enough -eh?!
Perhaps I am not the best witness of what to chase for in Udon since I have excellent company already which provides me with everything I need!
I like to spend time in Udon - because it is different, a lot cheaper and much more relaxed. Of course you should visit it!

I've been trying to book a room at their sister hotel (as I understand it) The City Lodge. Can't seem to get a reply from their website booking request, or from Steve himself at the Irish Clock. Will keep trying as both hotels look great.
