Many young girls, after graduation at University would want to travel and experience a bit of the world before they decide what to do with their lives.

Some work in foreign lands for some months or even years, outside of the protection of their families or communities.

Just a thought....

How much of a responsibility do these Language schools feel they should offer to exercise as opposed to leaving these young people alone to find out for themselves ?

And do we really look out for newly-arrived colleagues as much as we should ?

First my condolences to the family – especially surprising considering it happened in Japan.

But I think the language school should bare no responsibility for things like this. Anyone excepting a job in a foreign land has to realize there may be additional risks associated with such a situation and needs to take extra care in selecting the company they will work for and the people they associate with outside of work.

While I think it is a good idea for fellow workers to try and lend a hand (especially to newbies), I don’t think they bare any responsibility either. As many of us know some of the shadiest characters in Thailand are Farangs attempting to scam other Farang. In the end run a person is responsible for there own decisions in life.

Maybe not the case here, but many times people put themselves into risky situations – especially young adults. This happens both in the home country as well as abroad - hard to say if they put themselves more at risk abroad then in their home country. In the home country they my push the limits simply because they feel they are operating inside a comfort zone when in reality they are not. Abroad they my push the envelope or end up with the wrong people simply because the isolation.

IN A BATHTUB FILLED WITH SAND???

ON A BALCONY???

No one comments on that? What kind of ritual killing is that? Who keeps a bathtub filled with sand on their balcony? She never wondered why her boyfriend has an empty bathtub and bags of sand on his balcony?

I fail to see how and why the language school might even be argumnetally implicated in guilt, or where her colleagues and flatmates would fit in.

She's been there 5 months, which is enough to figure out the lay of the land, or is it?

Well, apparently a bathtub full of sand is a perfectly natural thing to keep on a balcony. I better get myself one, just to not stand out.

Seriously, no one finds this rather odd?

Have you ever been to Tokyo?
One can find all kinds of weird and wacky things on the balconies there.
Also hard to say for sure what they mean by bathtub – probably not your standard western style bathtub. And I doubt it was full of sand until after he placed the body in it.

Also hard to say what his "balcony" looks like from the outside without a picture. I have seen plenty of balconies in Tokyo that have lattice or other material hung to pretty much prevent anyone from seeing what is on the balcony anyway.

Then again maybe he is a Tokyo hillbilly. Plenty of bathtubs in the Southern States used a planters.

"They said she had gone to the apartment for the first time on Saturday to give English lessons to 28-year-old Tatsuya Ichihashi.

She had left details of the address at home before she disappeared and police are now trying to locate Mr Ichihashi."

No doubt he wanted more than an English lesson. Why did he think he would get that?

A question for the board gurus of Japanese culture...

In accepting money for her time and agreeing to come to what I am guessing is the apartment of an unmarried male, has she sent the wrong signal to her "pupil". Has she "touched a monk, pointed her feet or patted an elderly person on the head" and not realised? We have all made mistakes early in our time in a strange land.

Or is the guy just one of those that a girl can find anywhere if she is unlucky enough?
Particularly sad is the fact that she had taken some precautions (more than many would do) and left details of her whereabouts. What a waste....Enjoy.

The details of what has actually happened are still sketchy..

It appears that she was tied up with nylon garden rope.
It's also alleged that the suspect made first contact with her on the 21st of march outside a railway station. She ignored him and he follwed her home.
Once again, Its still all very sketchy.

Japan is becoming a place full of wacked out people, especially young people. You can see them on the trains, walking in the streets. I'm sure she did nothing wrong but to show him a little trust (being he is Japanese). Back in england I'm sure she wouldn't have trusted a fella off the street with such ease, but in Japan it's easy to do, and 99.99~% of the time, the trust is justified. Japan is becoming more dangerous, people are getting knocked off everyday, and it's normally by somebody the victim knows/related to.

She was a pretty girl. The suspect must have had some wierd idea that she was going to be HIS (animie induced delusions probably).

It's sad for the family and also sad for Japan. This type of thing is becoming more prominant, normally Japanese-Japanese though.
