Just a response to the thread title.

Wouldn't it be true to say that the Thailand anyone ever did know was always doomed? And the same goes for just about any other place.

Change happens. You go with it or retreat into a bubble of resentful nostalgia. But why do SO many people do this in LOS?

Mr Alan
I am very well aware of where my Nike's are made since they have a label that states that (just like all products sold in the USA). Same goes for my knit shirts.

I am not a masochist, and do not intend to throw away any products that I own that are made in Indonesia, but will not purchase any new ones. I wear New Balance shoes these days anyway.

I am sure that there are a lot of US firms in Indonesia, including Oil and Gas firms, McDonalds, Coca Cola, etc. I do not intend to boycott these companies because they have presence in Indonesia. Given the number of boycotts in Indonesia against USA and British firms these days, I doubt that there will be much future investment there, but that is just my opinion.

I really don't know a lot about the economy of Indonesia as a whole, and don't really care. What I do know is that the leaders of the country said some very nasty things about the US right after 9/11 and I choose to exercise my right as a consumer not to purchase products made there, and certainly not to vacation there. There are plenty of other options on both counts.

Before you start condemning sovereign states for their political stances you might also want to look at the moral or ethical standards of most of the worlds multi national companies.
For the most part they have no eithics or morals and you would be boycotting a very large number of products indeed if you want to start taking the high moral ground.

Mr Alan
I don't claim to be taking a "high moral ground" in not buying products manufactured in Indonesia or going there for a vacation. Since the government of Indonesia has said that the US got what it deserved on 9/11, my position is based on self-preservation, not morals. I believe that the position of the government of Indonesia is an accurate reflection of the population as a whole. Considering that many Indonesians are boycotting US products and companies, then I think my position is warranted.

Mr Alan,

The PI has changed a lot in the last 2.5 years, just because you are a Westerner is not a guarentee of safety any more.

Consider this, Warren Buffett has spent several million USD to protect employees he has on contract in PI by keeping a couple of 737s and an whole army of mercs on call to pull them out if necessary.

Knowing Mr. Buffett, I doubt he would be spending the money if the threat did not exist.

On the other hand he does not provide that service to his employees in LOS, he does not need to...

indonesia is a place that ive wanted to go to for quite a long time now, but not a single penny of my money will be spent after what was said post septemper 11th. im not on a one man crusade to ruin the countries economy, id just rather spend my money in a country that supported my own. why give money to someone who sees themself as your enemy when your friend could do with the money?

anyway, you know who your friends are. buy british.

theres f*** all wrong with our beef.

Way too glib, Arc...

Nothing wrong with change, per se.  But the despoiling of something that you cherished is lamentable, and I don't think people who complain about it are retreating "into a bubble of resentful nostalgia".

Not that it's not a nice turn of the phrase...

In this case, however, I think the Thailand being referred to, is the relatively unrestricted one, where the big boys left everybody alone to their debauchery, and ever-increasing numbers of desperate, soulless dimwits could find their way to paradise without benefit of understanding or reason.

I have NO nostalgia for THAT Thailand.

Now, THAT'S a nice turn of the phrase.

Even though you can't step in the same river twice, sometimes it's fun to get wet.

We can chat about it, but right now, the people with the power are acting.  Let's face it - we're the descamisados of Thailand in terms of political power.
