Just an update from my recent trip to HCMC.
There is a new club called LUSH located down the street from the Blue Gecko, on the corner. Sorry for the poor directions. It is kinda like a BKK Q bar, or bed club. A mix of Farangs and VN ppl. Not bad for VN.
If you want to go to a total trance place. There is a place called Volcano Club somewhere near where the Backpacker area is. Sorry for no directions. It is mostly a Hi So VN place, but they do have an awesome light show in there.

Qbar SGN is open till 2am these days, but for the most part it is a bunch of stuck up snobby farang who live there. VN Farang are a real strange breed IMHO, definately not the same as Thailand.
Also taxi guys seem to be acting much better in HCMC. Maybe the GOV got on their ass. All the guys worked off the meter. Also a lot of nicer Taxis on the road these days. Some toyotas like in BKK, and some SUV rigs.

LUSH is almost directly across the road from No. 5 bar.
Agree with taxis in VN, meters always used, taxis always clean and drivers always in a uniform, polite and courteous.

I may have an extended stay there in a couple of months - curious how they view Americans these days.
Lived in India, Thailand and currently the Phillipines - how does VN stack up?

Have never had anyone give a shit I was an American in VN. Most of all the younger generation at least really seem to like everything American.
VN is definately not as "safe" as Thailand. There are a lot more poor people around, so that lends to a lot of beggers, and people constantly trying to have you buy something from them on the street. I personally have not had anything bad happen there, but there is definately a greater chance to get robbed late at night, or get pick pocketed then you would ever think about in Thailand.
Crossing the street safely is probably your biggest concern, as the streets are filled with constant Motorbike traffic.
Overall the people are friendly, but not that friendly if you very use to life in thailand. They are still coming out of the closet. If you are with a VN girl, you will still have lots of VN eyes all over you.
The most annoying thing about VN for me is the Farang there. A strange bunch, unlike Thailand. A lot of snobby farang, or flaming leftist backpackers seems to be the norm.
Life in HCMC really bores me compared to BKK.

Hi Calzoid, was there (HCMC) last week. Very safe, probably safer than Los. No Anti Australian nor I suspect American feelings. Glad to take your money!
The run down "numbered" Bars in the Centre of HCMC vary in quality but you can usually find a few gems. There is a huge quantity of Freelancers working the Night Clubs and most of the Bars. Really beautiful women around, better built than most TG's.
Only real problem is Guest friendly Hotels which are hard to find! Most people only use the short time hotels of which there are plenty!

Of cause you will pay a higher price until you can actually speak a bit of Viet.
Best bet make friends with your hotel "lobby attendant",, give good tip,,, second day tell him you want some advice " Toi tick em dep lum,, Toi muon em dep lum,,,,, make sure you tell him he is invited to join in the hunt ( gives added incentive) ahhhhhhhhhhhh OH yeh Siagon full of beauties
