no doubt France has a rich, cultural heritage and should be respected as such. But so do India, Egypt, Japan........etc. That does not qualify them to be a world power and holds veto right in the UN Security Council. My point is with the France testing nuclear weapon : Can anyone tell me the necessity of such act of fruitility ?

You are arguing as if the French tested these nuclear weapons just yesterday - France has done nuclear testing in the South Pacific for a little under 6 months, from September 1995 to January1996 - a total of six tests are performed, after which France has declared an end to their tests in January 1996.

As to why these tests were performed? France being a nuclear power, having nuclear submarines and all the other nuclear toys (including nuclear bombs) decided that an additional battery of tests was needed to prove... that they aren't in the US' pocket (same year that the US declared an end to all nuclear testing), and to play nice (the results of the tests were avidly gobbled up by US nuclear scientists. In the end, they had every right to whatever they wanted - particularly as they were left with the six test weapons, and they found it more cost effective to discard them via explosion, than having to go through an expensive process of storage and de-weaponization. Lastly, bear in mind, once blown up, it's highly unlikely the plutonium will fall into the hands of terrorists.

Also, bear in mind, the South Pacific Atolls were a favorite test site for French nuclear tests from the 60s onwards (as well as of the US, I might add), supplanting their test site in the Algerian Sahara desert.

As to the ultimate reason why France conducts nuclear tests -- because they can.

I am surprised that they've been so inept at quelling these riots; if police can't handle them, where are the troops? 9 days of rioting?? In such situations, I'd adopt a shoot-to-kill policy, no doubt.

Double-edged sword - the riots allegedly started due to two kids electrocuting themselves when pursued by the police -- adding more police violence to the cocktail might lead to more excessive violence, the authorities may fear.

Either way, the way this is expanding and mushrooming, it will soon reach a point where the authorities have no other option than to shoot-to-kill, and I hope that happens soon.

I'm in 100% agreement regarding this situation - "I, for one, am sad to see a culture that gave us Voltaire and Maupassant being raped by a bunch of goons from Algiers." Hopefully, they will fall back on the strategies of Bonaparte and DeGaulle to deal with this problem, if it does not soon come to an end.

By this logic, then the biggest mistake of the colonial powers (or, just of France, in your world) was that they left, and they returned sovereignty to the countries in the middle east and Africa, right?

Further, by your logic, where are the riots in Britain, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, and others... who all played similar colonial games... Should they have yielded the same harvest for them?

It is not logic, it is fact. The reason there are Muslims from North Africa and the Middle East in France today is almost exclusively due to French colonialism in these parts of the world. Nowhere did I say that the French should have stayed as a colonial power in these nations.

It is common knowledge in the world today that, despite the existence of immigrants in France today, French society as a whole is extremely provincial and extremely racist.

And to push the irony further, I wonder if it could be said that:

It is common knowledge that anybody that starts a phrase with "it is common knowledge" is an untolerant narrowsighted bigot.

Some sensible posts from you, DD, and not just the one I am quoting.

An added circumstantial element to that is that there is a power struggle at the top going on, with the Prime Minister and the Minister of interior being overt competitors for the next presidential election. Through blame games and a touch of "politique du pire", this provides for some degree of paralysis in the higher echelon of power. And this is an issue that President Chirac's loss of credibility and stature will not help resolve.

no doubt they can. But so can many other nations who are more the "powers" of the world than France. Like I said, France testing nuclear weapon is like TBG testing a water pistol ! Who are they trying to fool or scare ?

Mr. Alan,

This may come as a shock to you, but merely the use of declarative statements like "it is fact" or "It is common knowledge in the world today" does not make it so - either you substantiate your statements, or you clearly state that they are your OPINION.

Otherwise, you run the risk of appearing 'provincial and extremely racist" or maybe an "intolerant narrowsighted bigot" yourself.

Please explain to me, then, what is the reason for Muslims from North Africa or the Middle East in Germany, England, Switzerland, the USA, Netherlands, etc... You somehow skimmed over that question, as well as answering where the riots in those countries are.

You may want to consider that testing nuclear weapons does not always have to do with 'fooling' or 'scaring' other people, or countries. In some ways, I have provided you a very clear answer to your question in my prior post, an answer that has nothing to do with fooling or scaring.
