Mr Alan
Maybe you might want to consider a boycott on petroleum products considering the source may well be regimes like well Indonesia for one or Saudi of Libya!
Don't worry thou you own government is much more practical in these  matters and does business with whoever they see fit.

"Could the type of American who I know exists (intelligent, unparanoid, openminded) please take guys like Mr Alan and Tsonoqua aside and explain to them that it is guys like them that give americans their reputation for stupidity, arrogance and paranoia."

I prefer to explain to guys like you why you're wrong.

After economic boycotts and sanctions, there's diplomacy, and after that there's cruise missiles.  Which do you prefer?  I know what the Iraqi answer is today.

Boycotts and sanctions, properly applied can make a difference.  Mr. Alan's statement about Apartheid South Africa is a good example.  Another one is Lybia.  Why do you think the Lybians are spending billions of dollars to get back into the community of nations?  It's because trade sanctions work.

In a global economy, economic pressure can effect changes in nations, especially poorer nations.

Let's face it - the economic giants are the U.S., China, India, Japan, Germany, the U.K. etc., not Indonesia.  You may think I'm stupid, but I'm smart enough to look up GDP's in the CIA World Fact Book.

Speaking of that, your statement, which I quoted at the start of my post, is the basis for Mr. Alan's statement that you were looking for someone to agree with you.  By stating your proposition as above, anyone who does not agree with you is stupid.  It's also a very smooth cheap shot.

To quote FDR,  "I revel in your hatred"

I too, agree with Smegma, and invite you to continue this discussion on the Z.

Excellent advice.

The Machine:

Our government, through the use of most favored nation status and the judicious use of import taxes, controls with whom we trade.  We buy the majority of our import oil from friendly nations.  If we would stop selling our high-sulfur Alaskan oil to the Japanese, we wouldn't have to buy oil from anyone but our friends.  We choose to support our allies, though.

Our government is not above using force to get its way on oil.

Consider this:  Iraq sat on the second largest pool of oil on the planet.  Whose troops are now in control of those oil wells?  Where do you think that oil is going to go?

Once again, I'll look for you all on the Z if you care to continue.
