No, a US citizen cannot just arrive in Vietnam without a visa arranged in advance. And they wouldn't let you on the plane without one. You will need a visa in advance from a Vietnam embassy or consulate (many BKK travel agencies can do this for you, or it is super easy at the Vietnam embassy on Wireless Rd.).

Technically, you can arrange in advance for a "Visa-on-arrival". It involves some paperwork a few days in advance and the visa will be stamped in your passport when you land in Vietnam. Search Google for "Visa on arrival and vietnam" and you will find a few agencies that do it. You'll still need the approval letter to board the plane, and depending on where you check in for your originating flight, the check-in agent might not understand how an approval letter is valid for entry to Vietnam.

Thai citizens do not need a visa to enter Vietnam, only a valid passport.

Make sure yoyr plans are set, so that you know if you need a "single entry" or "multiple entry" visa.
Enjoy,,
P.S If you find a really nice gal and want a side trip,, try Da Lat,,, BEAUTIFUL place and only a few hours from HCMC ( Saigon), its up in the mountains so a cool escape and a boat trip on the lakes is great.
Also the coffee in Vietnam is out of this world,,,
toi muon mot caffe sua nuuk da, I want one coffee with milk and ice ( iced coffee).
Enjoy but also make sure you haggle hard on prices,, farang price multiplications in Vietnam are far greater than in BKK.

Mel,

Ditto the Dalat recommendation. A really unique place. They even have radio/wireless towers up there that are smaller take-off of the Eiffel Tower. Really neat.

You can (for most people holding Western Passports) usually get a Visa on arrival if you arrange it through the state sponsered Travel agent:-

http://www.e-travelvietnam.com/visa.asp

I have used them when I have had to travel to HCMC & Hanoi urgently. They charge around $35 USD for the preapproved Visa, then you pay $25 USD upon arrival. You need passport 2 Photos, not sur why as they always give one back?

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 4 January 2007 :-

Thais flood into Vietnam, but overall numbers disappoint
==================================
Vietnam welcomed an estimated 3.6 million international visitors last year, a modest increase of 3 per cent over 2005 and numbers the government are calling disappointing.

The performance was mainly due to a sharp decrease in the number of Chinese tourists, according to the General Statistics Office. Only 516,000 visited Vietnam, 28 per cent lower than last year's figure.

While the overall the number of tourists showed little movement, increasing 1.5 per cent, the number of business travellers jumped 16 per cent to about 575,000. Visitors from Thailand represented the biggest increase from any one country. Budget airlines helped ferry 123,000 tourists from Thailand, a 42-per-cent jump over 2005.

After China, the largest number of foreign visitors to Vietnam came from South Korea with 421,000, following by the United States with 385,000 and Japan with 383,000.

The office said the number of international visitors to Vietnam was still below the government's expectations despite the efforts of domestic travel agencies to improve and diversify tourism services.

Tourism in the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) continued to struggle because of battered infrastructure, lack of investment and haphazard coordination, the nation's tourism authority said recently.

The Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) said little progress had been made in breathing new life into the sector since officials from 18 central provinces and cities met in April 2004. The news means it is unlikely the provinces would hit tourism targets for 2006.

Tourism managers in Da Nang, Quang Nam and Thua Thien Hue met several times to discuss the creation of a regional body, but those plans were still on the drawing board, VNAT reported. Instead, local officials have opted to pursue their own strategies.

In late March 2005, the three provinces launched festivals at the same time without any cross-advertising. As a result, travellers were not aware of the events taking place nearby, the tourism authority said.

One of the most important targets for 2006 - labelled the National Year of Tourism - was making the central provinces a holiday destination, Ho Thi Thanh Lam, vice chairwomen of the Quang Nam People's Committee, said last year.

A series of tourism and cultural events took place last year, but officials have not seen radical changes. Local experts said the VNAT's target of attracting 2.5 million foreigners and 10 million domestic visitors by 2010 seemed to be out of reach.

Tran Minh Ca, vice chairman of the Quang Nam People's Committee, said the provinces could generate more revenue through cooperation.

Dinh Hai, director of the Quang Nam Department of Tourism, said that would lower the cost of organising festivals and give visitors a panoramic view of the area. The national tourism body could act as the coordinator between the provinces and help attract investors, Hai added.

Vu The Binh, an official with the national tourism agency, suggested the central provinces should speed up immigration at Da Nang and Phu Bai airports along with processing at road and sea borders. They should also diversify tourism services and focus on advertising, he said.

Little Big Man
MY VIETNAM VISIT: I don't write very well so I will make this more as facts as I see them as apposed to FR format. Stayed in HCMC for 7 days recently and liked it. It confused me the first couple of days, but after I got used to it, it kind of grew on me. I will be back.

HOTEL: Stayed at the Spring Hotel in District one, small Botique hotel, good value, $25 to $35 average, and are all western tourists that stay there as near as I could tell. Free breakfast, average but adequate. NOT girl friendly, but said they could bring in a massage girl no problem if I wanted. Nothing else.

MINI HOTELS: Next time I visit, I will have a better idea of where to stay. Met several girls I wanted to bring back to my hotel but couldn't, and hate paying $20 to $25 more for a short-time hotel in addition to the girl. So in an afternoon, checked out hotels, and found several, every bit up to western standards, from $20 to $40, that said they definately had no problem with bringing a girl back. Mini-hotel is kind of a misnomer because some of the girl friendly hotels were 7 or 8 floors, and some 2 or 3 floors. I would recommend taking an afternoon and walking around district 1 and checking hotels for your next visit. There are some good ones and they are not advertising on the internet.

"LOW-LIFE" BARS: My favorite was a dingy bar (bar 49), on 49 Hai Ba Trung street, just very short walk from either the continental or Sheraton hotels. If you want to see a 10, ask for Vung. She is pretty and has one of the most gorgeous bodies I have ever seen. She asked for $25 for BJ and $50 for short time (+$25 for mini hotel). With BJ she would decline to remove clothes but if you wave a $5 bill at here and say tip, she would. 100% better with her clothes off. Check her body out.

MORE EXPENSIVE "BARS"
New World Catwalk. About 20 girls will be paraded by your table and if you like one, you just let them know. Expensive place so if you leave with one, it will set you back $100 or so for sex, as I am told. Also told that you can pick one, sit with her, buy her drinks (expensive), and the fee is around $18 + tip. This is last part is what somebody told me so if anyone can verify or correct this, feel free to. I went there found the drinks (around $4) OK for the view and experience but declined a girl although all were 8 thru 10s. I liked one of the waitresses and got here phone number. Next night we went to dinner, but would not put out. The waitresses, will not sit with you, or leave with you, but if they like the cut of your jib, will give their cell phone number.

VIETNAMESE GIRLS: I find the vietnamese girls prettier than Thai or Cambodia. Generally, lighter skin tone, and somewhat less pronounced facial features. I was always good to go for instant sexual gratification but had alot of fun meeting "nice" girls, working as waitresses, or receptionists, etc., going to dinner with them and getting to know them. The "nice" girls in VN just seemed more receptive to meeting westerners that in Thailand or Cambodia. BUT none of them would put out. I got the sense they eventually would have once it got past the first 2 or 3 dates. This part of VN I liked.

TRAFFIC: traffic is hell just like any developing country in SE Asia. But almost 90% motorcycles. Much pollution. If I walked around town much, I always woke up in the morning with red eyes.

DISCOS:
went to Apocalypse now on new years eve. Very crowded and TOO loud. Had to see it but left before midnight and celebrated in another bar. Also went to Bar 13 across busy street from Saigon river. Not really a disco, but had good live music. I liked it, for entertainment value, lots of vietnamese (I think many vietnames americans), but drinks pricey.

VIETNAMESE AMERICANS: I was surprised at the high number of vietnamese americans visiting VNN. At first I had a hard time picking them out, but while eating at a Vienamess restaurant, one of the waiters respectfully pointed out that they carry more fat. Had the pleasure of meeting two Vietnames americans while there and went out and partied with them two nites. They showed me some out of the way places that I wouldnb't have ordinarily found. They chased the local skirts and were not shy about spending money. Noticed that some of the restaurants we went to were frequented almost entirely by Vietnamese americans. What I noted was how "statusy" they were. Paid alot of attention to what to wear, where to go, how to be seen and who to be seen with. Always pleasant though.

VIETNAMESE FOOD: I liked it. Similiar to Thai food but without the heat (Much less spicey, and I liked that). Ate Vietnamese food every day, including the great soup (pho) several times. If I needed a western fix, I went to Mogambo cafe, combination small hotel and cafe. They boasted the best hamburgers in HCMC and although this is the only place I ate western, they were good. Great breakfasts, much better than my hotel. But you will pay american/western prices for these. Mogambo is run by an expat american and his fat, loud, ornery vietnamese wife.

INTERNET: Several hotels boast wireless, including the Spring Hotel where I stayed, but is slow and not with wide bandwidth. I couldn't get Skype to work without distortion anywhere in HCMC, including internet cafes. Has anybody else had this trouble? Anybody had better luck with other Internet phone services in VNN and Camboda?
