Machine is heading back to the ME after a year in the western world and this time I am heading to unknown Qatar.
Does anyone here know what the score is in Doha?
Hang outs girls etc
Is it better than Bahrain or would I be better off going to Bahrain on the weekends?

No personal experience, but from what I've heard: grim. Below Bahrain, above Kuwait, KSA (ha, ha).
Years ago, there was some action in some hotels: a girl would rent a room and, with help from staff, that room number would be passed to clients. It was 1-shot, knock them out as quickly as possible as there's always "Next". Knew a girl who'd done this, it was a nice hotel, not one of the "dubai tcn sleezy" ones. Good money, but a lot of wear and tear on the merchandise.
I'd suggest checking out airfares to dxb or bahrain.

Or Abu Dhabi - I know some people working there say the scene is pretty good these days. Shame you would have to pass through KSA or it would be just about drivable for a long weekend.
I also knew a girl who was working Doha around the end of last year. She developed a few regular clients. Some of whom used to visit her when she returned to DXB
There was also a story of a high ranking female PRC diplomat being refused entry to a 5 star hotel on suspicion she was a hooker - apparently this caused a bit of a stir!

I think it will be Bahrain as I have lots of mates there and can probably get free accommodation.
The flight is only 20 mins.
I would have thought with all the soldiers in Qatar and the amouunt of expats around that there would be a scene there these days.

Good to hear you are coming back to the friendly confines of the ME. I am returning to RUH next Friday.
I would think Doha might have some action with the US military around. Having said this, there is a possibility the US Military is so concerned about Islamic sensitivities, they might have the enlisted men locked up while they are in the country.

I spent 2 months there a few years ago. The situation was pretty dire. There is action there, but you have to go out of your way to get it. I ended up just flying to Dubai for the weekends. Bahrain is ok, but nothing compared to Dubai.

KSA has got worse since 9/11, but I would prefer it to Libya for example. A lot depends on where you are, who you work with and the type of contract etc. – and while it was never a barrel of laughs but I would say boring rather than unpleasant, at least until the security turned all the housing compounds into prison camps.

Compared to most Middle East and African countries I have worked, DXB seems pretty good to me – from a lot of perspectives, not just P4P – For the "young, free and single" there are non P4P opertunities, decent and not too expensive restaurants (there is a particularly good selection of cheap Chinese and Indian ethnic restaurants out side of the hotels), plenty of entertainment and sports etc make it one of the better places to be posted in my company. KL is probably the most highly coveted posting.
But I agree in as much as cannot see the big attraction for buying apartments here or it being a big holiday destination. It’s close to the Sandlands however so a useful bolt hole for a weekends R&R. For me the killer is the traffic

Actually, after that incident, it has gotten better.
Not a response to your post directly BC, I however want to shed light as to what really happens here.
The scene among westerners is still going good and very much inside those prison camps so I don’t know what all the wailing is about. Just as p4p is a risk in dxb so it is one in ksa as well.
Rather than speculations of whether you'd be stoned or your nads chopped off, a tiny survey would tell you that westerners are usually left alone at their business until some idiot makes it painfully obvious as to what’s going on. Even on those cases, you get a small sentence (few months ) and deportation. This is much better than anything Capital as decreed by Islamic Law.
Not so lucky nationalities (read brown) get sentences in years and at times even death.
There are pimps here that will approach you after some familiarization. These can be Arab as well as Asians. Rumors about maids & nurses (all nationalities) are true as well if you’re inclined to hunt semi or non p4p.
As I have posted before, the big problem is place. You really have to make your comings and goings, and those of your "friends" invisible. Either by having a villa or apartment (flat) in a neighborhood that doesn’t have meddlesome people (read posh area), or in a compound.
The place issue is where it gets many people. As far as availability is concerned, I have tasted just about all of them cept CIS because you don’t have much of those here in KSA. You have to watch out for herpes in the non-pro "active" western crowd, seems the rates have risen for some reason.
Hope this sheds light on the KSA situ.
