I've found some information on hotels on this site, but its kind of limited. Its my first trip. I want to visit Hanoi and Saigon and looking for cheap basic hotels with or without aircon. A fan is fine. Something near the action and food places. Gf if possible, but not necessary. If there's no action in Hanoi or limited as I've read, then walking distance to food, bars, tourist sites. The cheapest I've found on sites like precisionreservations and passionasia is Camellia 4 hotel in East Hanoi, Hoan Kiem / Hai Ba Trungnot, not sure where that is, at $21 usd. In Saigon, Lae vien hotel at $25 usd and Saigon royal at $28 both in District 1. If I go to museums and just seeing the city, how many days should I stay in each place? Is the rainy season as bad as they say in May or better to go in March? Thanks.

Can't recommend cheap accomodations but can tell you there was ample action on some small side streets in the Old Quarter. I was there a few weeks ago and had many young lovelies come zipping up on the motorcycles offering services.
Find the street where the Tet Bar and Mask bar are located (maybe called Hang Be) and then up that road towards Hang Bac. It's not Sumhumvit but I enjoyed my time there

In HCMC there are some very nice "Cheap" hotels around the location of the New World hotel. The rooms are nice, clean, aircon, safe, sat tv, etc. You can also have local girls stay the night without any problems. Very close to many things
Look up the contact info for one place I stayed in another thread discussing this same question.

Based on my trip to Phenom Peng and Siam Reap, Cambodia, I found some cheap hotels walking around near the river and tourist areas that were 15 USD or less per night. They weren't advertised on any travel websites. I figured there might be some places like this in Hanoi or Saigon. Are hotels just not as cheap in Hanoi or Saigon? How many days do I need to spend in each place and what about the rainy season in May? Thanks.

In Vietnam, any hotel $15 or more will come with AC, TV and hot water. Room with fan is around $5 a night. Most mini hotel (private own) more likely will allow you bring girls to your room for over night and almost every hotels in any class will let girl in your room before 9pm no question ask. Girls is hard to find in Hanoi but available even in a small island in Ha Long Bay (cat Ba).
