I've been chatting online with several girls in Vietnam over the last few months. They have each said that if I go to Vietnam, they will be more than willing to meet me and show me around. However, reading about others' experiences, it seems there are only two types of Vietnamese women -- virgins and prostitutes. And if the former are seen with a white guy on the streets, she will get a heap abuse hurled at her by her fine countrymen.
The girls I know seem to be legit student types, not prozzies, since I've "known" them for quite some time now and have even seen them on Internet cafe Webcams. I've also known Viet working girls in Cambodia, who appear to be in a different class all together.
So what is the explanation? Are my online acquaintances so innocent that they just don't comprehend the consequences of meeting me? If so, I'm reluctant to take up their offers. Or are they simply prozzies in elaborate disguise? Want to hear your views. Thanks.

Koenji,having being to Cambodia several times and having talked to local expats from Vietnam, if the girls are the real deal,they would not be seen with you,maybe some of the smarter pimps have worked out the internet,I`m asuming you are a westerner,if not check a lot of sites in regard to your question as Pro`s are a no no in Vietnam and if you do partake you need an extra room,for your guest.

Koenji - For what it's worth, I went to Vietnam (HCM City) in October 2002 and I or the couple of girls I met there didn't experience any abuse on the streets, etc. when we were together. From what I can gather, things there are becoming more relaxed, though it's much more conservative than some parts of Thailand I've visited e.g. Bangkok or Pattaya.
Out of interest, may I ask which chatrooms you used?

I have been to Saigon (HCMC) a number of times and have experienced both P4P and "regular" sources of entertainment. I met a girl through the internet before one of these trips and maintained contact with her for quite a while.
She falls into the wide space on the spectrum between "prozzies" and "virgins". There are quite a few well educated, attractive Vietnamese women who like to spend time with non-Viets.
This particular lady has what sounds like a good job in a medium sized electronics company, but she says her job is boring, low paying and offers little chance of upward mobility. After I got to know her a little bit, she told me her dream is to find a foreign husband and move away from Viet Nam (I chose not to volunteer for that mission.) She was a very interested and interesting person to know.
She was also a lot of fun. We went to dinner a number of times, usually with her wearing lovely "ao dai's" and riding me around town on the back of her motorbike. She lives with her family, and has to be home by 11pm, so I always had time to enjoy the early hours with her and find P4P ladies later in the evening.
On some days, she and her married girlfriend would pick me up, go to little "out of the way" Hue restaurants for lunch, then head to karaoke places to sing the afternoon away. They added a fresh dimension and perspective to my trips.

From my experience of vietnam :
Rule number one: the dream of nearly any girl in vietnam is to marry a foreigner, wether virgin or prostitute.
Rule number two: any girl who will make love with you on short term (after a few days or even weeks) is probably a prostitute
You can encounter different types of girls
(1) prostitutes (called taxi girls), as in thailand they may be very friendly, may not go with a customer they don't like, would usually be happy to be your girlfriend, and can eventually fall in love with you.... you allways have to pay something whatever happens. (see previous post on vietnam for tariffs)
(2) "boyfriend business" oriented girls, usually smarter and speaking more or less english, they look for longer term business, that is someone who will support them and their familly. If you don't stay permanently in vietnam, you can be shure they have other "boyfriends" while you are not there. Many girls also are both (1) and (2) types according to opportunities. These girls may be smart enough not to sleep with you too quickly so that you believe that they are "good girls". Anyway, one way or another, you will have to pay....
(3) "good girls" May not be virgins, but would not usually make love on short term. They would wait to be sure of your intentions and that you don't just want to be with them for "fun". Foreigners have reputation to have "fun" with the girls and then go back home, leaving them with only tears. Eventually will not make love untill married or engaged.
In brief, the probability of of finding a "real" girlfriend making love to you for free during your holydays, is close to zero.

i guess this topic all depends on the bottom line question: are you looking for marriage?
if the answer is 'no', then i'd say that your initial question doesn't matter who they are or where they came from.
but if it's 'yes', then goodluck! be prepared financially to take care of her and her family. which will soon be living with/off of you.
