I have lived in Asia for 19 years and simply love Asia. My dear mother is 73 and suffers from minor strokes and is becoming less and less independent. She lives with my unemployed sister who receives disability.
My dear mother lives off of Social Security and what little I send her. She also has medicare unfortunately in the States presecriptions drugs are very expensive with ot without medicare. She spends over 300 a month on needed prescriptions.
My degree (MA TESOL) is not that marketable in the States. I love being a university lecturer here. Mostly I wrestle with guilt as I have lived overseas so long and rarely go back to visit family. Now I am wrestling with the idea of moving back to the States to be nearer to them while risking unemployment or under employment, as well as the knowledge that I will be leaving something I really love?????
Can any of you share your experience with older parents and some decisions you had to wrestle with?
Also, I do not have the ind of income to place my dear mother in an assisted care facility.
A lot of you guys on this board have been through the Older Parent experience, so would like to hear your feedback.

Aren't there retirement communities in Thailand, where you can pay for her declining years in smaller dollars? (You, and social security). Something close to BKK, so that good hospital care is close by.

The job situation in the US is still fairly tight, so I would not come back unless you had some kind of employment lined up. Underemployment is one thing, unemployment is a different matter. So if you can hold off for a few years, I would do that.

As TJ suggested - is it at all possible for you to bring her and your sister to Thailand? The weather should be good for her, the cost of living will allow their meager social security and disablity to last far longer than in the US, and medical care is pretty damn good in Thailand (if not better than in the west).
The biggest advantage is that they would be close to you, and you could be at her side moderately quickly, if you need to.

Social Security will pay for 6 months of skilled nursing care for free. Then your mother will have to go on Medicaid. The government will take her assets and make her sell them. I'm talking about a house. She will be placed in a decent/good nursing home at no further cost to her. I had to do this for my mother. It's tough to do but my mom was not able to live with us as she needed 24 hour skilled nursing care.

It sounds like the only thing affecting your decision is the unemployed part. If you have lived in asia for 19 years, you should be fluent in some languages. With the spread of casinos throughout the USA, ppl that speak both english, and an asian language are in big demand as casino hosts. The pay is good, and the benefits are usually better than other corporations.
Just a suggestion. I work in the industry, biggest growth sector in the USA right now.

The short answer is....no!
If you are on S/S, medicare and medicaid are not available for those outside the US.

thank you all for your very encouraging and helpful suggestions! My mother has billsz as opposed to assets. Had she married the SOB that she had lived with for 20 years, she would be rich, but she left him right before he died and she got nothing. I send her money, she doesn't send me money. I heard about Medicaid, but she always wanted her independence. It is horrible to watch someone dwindling away.
I was in Hong Kong 15 years, but my Cantonese lacks tonal excellence.
You are good bros, I will be there next week, can I buy you a beer?
