Remember the coup’s that happened in los many years ago, I think it was 73 and 92, cannot remember which of those years it actually was.

Was anyone here for the 92 one ?? if so, what was it like and how long did it go on for.

Does anyone think that it will happen again in this country, after all it was not that long ago. Thailand seems to have changed little really since then, except for the skyline and an increase in income and expense across the board. It also seems to be currently one of the more stable countries in the region.

I think that the present PM is amassing all his troops into his own little basket so that he can apply the iron fist and there will be nobody around to either dare uprise, or be able to. All of the cronies seem to be friends and family, no one would dare face up against that kind of across the board cronyism. Any force with the desire to uprise, would need the support of a few key people and if they are all close allies or family of the PM, then what chance would they have, very little and it would be canned before even any serious consideration was given a chance. No diplomatic voting process will ever be given a chance.

Soon, with the merging of parties and nobody left to oppose him, he will have his way and whatever he commands, will happen. If this happens, I think a move to greener pastures might be in order, hmmmm but where.

I am going to take up arms with the bg party if anything happens, I'll stand behind, in front and beside them little skirts anyday, possible even in !

Wow NM you must be bored - maybe I am too.

Different coups - but I was here in May 1992 - I had just arrived.

There was a huge fuss but very little action for most of the time. There was a lot of excitement - companies pulling their employees out of Bangkok... but noone knowing if they could even get to the airport.

My number one memory. I was getting married to an english girl living in england (how f_cking stupid does that sound!!). She was arranging the wedding in England - she was doing all the arranging.

Anyways she rings me in the middle of the coup - there is even a tank outside our office in Sathorn.

'what colour roses do you want for your buttonhole?' she asks. The first time I have been consulted about the wedding arrangements.

'Err yellow' I reply...

'you cant have that' she says 'yellow is for funerals.... better make it red'

....we got divorced a while back....

...but there are some nice photos (although I look a bit pissed....) (as in drunk rather than pissed off)

What was your question? No I dont think it will happen again... army no longer weald the same influence...

An uprising today seems unlikely unless the economy tanks again. General mood seems ok as people have food and jobs. But prices are beginning to move up due to oil prices and if that causes a recession, all bets are off.

Is there anyone strong enough in the military to make the move today?

Greener pastures? Fewer and fewer places offer anything better. Vietnam has plenty of its own problems.

Wasn't in LOS during past coups and it is interesting that there is seldom much talk about them among the Thais I know.

One reason could be that most BG's weren't born yet for the 1st one. I will bring up the idea of a new BG party during all of my subsequent political discussions in Nana and SC to test the waters on its viability and send a FR.

This is a tricky one ?

From what I have read 1996 was quite nasty and 1992 had tanks on the streets. I am not sure about what happened in 1973?

The mind-set of Dear Leader the Chairman is similar to our own Dear Leader Tony B.Liar. They both love America. They both have a dictatorial bent and they both love the World stage and being in power.

Remember the buying Liverpool football club farce ?

All forgotten ? The present PM will no doubt get re-elected. His march towards his goal of a US inspired (system) Thailand based on the Singapore model will continue apace.

What internal opposition there is to him and his people is difficult to say. As a westerner making an assessment of this culture is probably impossible.
I have spoken to bar girls, educated and Hi-So Thais who can't stand him. Yet, you can do the same in England, I have met few who like Tony Blair.
But he still and will get elected, so in this case so will the Thai Dear Leader. Look at his bio - lots of American connections. Even his off-spring work in a fast-food outlet, "for experience". Imagine that happening in France ? They would throw-up at the smell of fast food?
Like Blair I expect he is a Republican at heart- I think that comes from the Love-Affairs with America.

Change ? Not in the short term.

The one time something 'may' happen is when the inevitable sad news hits the Kingdom.

Then I see a major jokeying for position.
'Old Guard' versus 'New Guard' -
I shall be in Europe on purpose at this time but knowing my luck will probably get caught in the thick of it ?

As I said, as 'Westerners' we probably haven't got a clue what is really going on.

Back in 1992 I still watched World news quite a bit and I don't even remember anything going on ?
Unlike Tiannamen Square - Which I will never forget.

Especially the young student standing defiantly in front of that row of tanks. What a brave and courageous lad ! I wonder if he survived the aftermath ?

Identified and later arrested according to one story. Gives me chills seeing the picture, but way better reminder of how fragile freedom is if you see the video. Not to mention the recent video of the F----- G--- member burning himself in the T. Square.

MN, your thread title is wrong.....should read, 'Will it ever STOP happening?

Nothing ends in Asia. It just gets 'paused'.

Tiananmen 'tank man' still at large

The lone Chinese protester who brought a column of tanks to a standstill in Tiananmen Square during the 1989 crackdown was never arrested and is still at large, a Hong Kong-based dissident group has said.

Seven hundren people were killed in the Tiananmen Square crackdown

Chinese students who supported the pro-democracy movement captured the attention of the world's media with their seven-week occupation of Tiananmen Square in June fifteen years ago.

However, the most memorable images are of a young man, carrying what appears to be a shopping bag, who refused to move out of the way of the advancing tanks.

He then climbed onto the leading tank and spoke to the driver.

The Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy Movement in China says it has obtained official documents that show the Chinese government does not know what happened to him.

Although the man was initially identified as Wang Weilin, the documents suggest the name was false.

In response to an inquiry, President Jiang Zemin is said to have blamed journalists for giving authorities the wrong name. The Chinese government gave up looking for the man after checking lists of the dead and imprisoned.

Time magazine has cited the unidentified protester as one of the "top 20 leaders and revolutionaries" of the 20th century.

Dubbing him "the Unknown Rebel," the American news journal said his moment of fame was seen by more people than laid eyes on Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and James Joyce combined.

Yes, it could happen in LOS...

That's Chinese gov't talk for "We arrested and killed him... pesky kid!"

Of course they officially don't know what happened to him, and of course the counter revolutionary folks want to keep the perception that he's alive, alive. You'd think he'd have surfaced somewhere in the past 15 years.

My money is on he's dead - the fragile price of freedom.

And whoever thinks that Tiananmen Square was the end of the people's yearning for freedom is dead wrong. All the Chinese gov't has done is drive it underground.

Just my $0.02.

The memory is being erased, most students under 20, have no idea it happened. Those over 20 have another focus....the good life, because if you have money, you don't give a sh_t about freedom.

And Harry, this is not an opinion.

Ronaldo........thanks dude, but there are a number of layers of truth to all things here. I hope he is free, and one day surfaces with the same bravado he displayed years ago. But I think he is gone.

Do you know that the vast majority of people in China have NEVER seen his picture of that day? I have yet to meet a mainlander who has (of the people I trust to ask of course).
