O.K, now I am going to BKK for the third time and I luvit, I usually only stay for 3-4 days. I have never travelled with the skytrain and this time I want to. I know to go to the weekend(Chattuchak) market I can get off @ Mo-Chit or Saphan-Khwai station. But lets say I live in the Pratunam area (D'Ma Hotel), where is the closest station to enter, do I buy the ticket on the station, what is the average charge and does anyone know where I can find a detailed map of the skytrain, cause I am sure if you should tell me where to enter the station I would not know how to get there.
Thank You

you have to buy your ticket in the station you enter the skytrain. there are vending machines at the stations and a plan of the skytrain net. just look up the station where you want to go and press the number in the machine. you will get a ticket accordingly. from pratunam to mo-chit will be about thb 30 for the ride.
any decent map you can buy or get at the hotel reception will have the skytrain stations marked on it. so just ask for one or buy one in any bookshop, supermarket or filling station!

If you're planning to use it quite a bit it may be better to get the stored value ticket (I think about B230) which includes the cost of the rechargeable ticket - the ticket office staff seem to speak english ok and are helpful.  I think there is a tourist special offer ticket as well.  If I don't use up my stored value ticket I just pass it on to the girl I take out on my last night in town.

Maps have always been available at any Skytrain station. However, if you're interested, this is the official BTS website:
http://www.bts.co.th/index1-e.htm

And if you're really, really interested, this is the unofficial Skytrain website:
http://www.angkor.com/2bangkok/Skytrain/index.shtml

Enjoy.

If you plan to do more than a couple of trips in a day, an unlimited use day ticket for 100 baht is the way to go.

Nazeem: If you live in the USA or another country where you drive on the right side of the road (Thais dirve on the wrong side-the left side) remember that the sky train also runs on the wrong side (the left side). That can make a difference to you after climbing the stairs to the train tracks and you find that you are on the wrong side which means that you will have to go back down a level, cross over to the other side and climb the stairs again.

The closest station to Pratunam is Ratchathewee station.
Just 100 meter from corner of Phaithai/Petchaburi roads. It will cost you about 25 Bath(i think) to get to Mochit.

From the Mo Chit terminus the Sky Train runs along Paholyothin Rd. to the Victory Monument (Sawaree) roundabout then goes up Phya Thai, crossing Petchburi Rd. and on to cross Ploenchit, So, it is very close to Pratunam, an easy walk over to Phya Thai as the brethren have pointed out.

Incidentally, a lot of people seem to think that the Victory Monument commemorates Thai (Siamese) participation in the Allied victory of WWI. Actually that's not the case. It commemorates the Thai victory against the Vichy French from colonial Laos (maybe also Cambodia) at start of WWII, until the Japanese put a stop to Vichy adventurism when they occupied Thailand.

Sorry to any French brethren but I doubt any patriotic Frenchman today would care to identify with Vichy policies anyway. The French just released a senior Vichy collaborator (i.e., Nazi stooge) from prison...yesterday...57 years after VE day, even longer since the liberation of Paris...

NB: this post has nothing to do with the hobby...

Actually the Thai move attempted to recapture laotian and cambodian provinces that were taken by France at the begining of the 20th century.  After the 40 debacle, Vichy had no mean to do anything about it. Anyway, under any regime, the colonial adventure in Indochina was always just that, an adventure, run semi-privately by the navy, with very reluctant support from the governement.

About the collaborator who was released: he only had been in jailed for 2 or 3 years. He had a 'brillant' carrer as a civil servant after the war, being prefet (governor) of Paris in the 60s (ordered the killing of a few hundred of arabian demonstrator in 61...) and even minister in the 70s. His role as a collaborator during the war surfaced only in the 80s. It then took almost 20 years to judge him. He is now 92 and was released on humanitarian ground.  This whole episode shows that anything about the Vichy regime in France is always very complex and ambiguities abound.

Anyway it's always a good joke to explain to newly arrived compatriots what the victory monument is about. They usually can't believe it...

fib.
