Since I don't have a laptop, I use the internet cafes in Thailand to do personal and business emails but now need to do some on line banking. I have some conscerns, because I have heard that some internet cafes are dishonest and can use software to track and record the keystrokes of users, in order to get usernames/passwords. Here are a few questions I have:

1) Has anybody ever experienced this scam or know anybody who has?
2) Besides having your own laptop and own outside line how can this be avoided.
3) When I do travel with a laptop on my next trip, is this same scam or other similiar ones happen on WIFI?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hope the following helps:

1) Has anybody ever experienced this scam or know anybody who has?

Many internet shops have key loggers installed. Sometimes it is done by staff, but many times you'll find it was done by spyware/customers.

2) Besides having your own laptop and own outside line how can this be avoided.

Unless you can control the environment you work in (bringing your own laptop), it can't be avoided. It'll be "up to you", be secure and bring a laptop or use the local shops and be insecure. There isn't any middle ground here.

3) When I do travel with a laptop on my next trip, is this same scam or other similiar ones happen on WIFI?

WIFI is only how the connection is made (instead of using a cable). If your laptop is configured properly, has a personal firewall and the site you connect to use encryption (https), then you should be ok.

I assume every Internet Cafe computer has a key logger. I don't bother even looking for them, I just assume everything I type is being logged. Hell, I could install one on a machine in about 30 seconds, then come back in a few days and see the log file of everything anyone has typed.

You can easily defeat them (i.e. confuse then) when you type in your username and passwords at sites. See this link for a hint on the technique.

Many variations of this technique exist and it only takes a few seconds to have neither your username nor password logged correctly. I use a variation of the second technique in the article I linked to (copying characters into the clipboard then pasting).

The only piece of advice you ever need to know on this subject: DO NOT *EVER* USE AN INTERNET CAFÉ FOR PERSONAL OR PROFESSIONAL BANKING or any other sort of finances. NOT. EVER.

Also don't forget to "log off" of every site you visit, including this one.

Two years ago I made some postings from Nana i-cafe, and next day logged on to find that "I" had made some more postings about American politics and international relations on this forum. I was roundly chewed in pm's from several longtime members. BK says its not that rare.

If you read the link CG posted one of the ways is to store you password on a floppy. I found I could store a text file and infact lots of other files on my memory card for my camera. The camera didn't seem to mind me doing this and still worked fine. Saves you having to carry a floppy

Thanks for the info guys, I must admit I have used internet cafes in LOS for banking purposes, including the one in the shopping centre on Suk opposite Bullys.

Has anyone returned home from LOS and found that a keylogger has used their banking details from an Internet cafe?

No, but the Computers at Gulliver's have been very suspect for at least a year (Key loggers etc!), so I would be very careful!

Also don't use it for BTF. They have locked it so you can't delete your temp internet files or cookie's.
