JackRabbit present... In thread "Thai bouncers=pussies..." Packripper and I started discussion of certain objects and I found this question interesting . Background is that in September I noticed good amount of peoples ; both falangs and thais; carrying clipped folders (=folding knife with a spring attached in handle) . How are peoples carrying impact / edged " communi-cation devices" treated by police if found carrying (NOT USING IN FIGHT) one ; so , what is the legality of these tools ? Legal , shady area or illegal ? This is a good question thinking that those objects are for sale almost everywhere. This question is made in search of information , my personal idea for having fun DOES NOT INCLUDE GETTING IN A FIGHT !!! TPE , CJ ?? JR

... a case of if someone can sell something, and make a profit, they will - dont think the local police would be impressed if they found one on you ... but then how often have you been searched in Bangkok ?? - me a couple of times in a dozen years, when drugs checks were being done, - some upmarket places, La Lunar for one, have metal detectors, - but alot of Thais, especially females, carry a knife with them ... probably never used except to slash the wrists occasionally, and although this is a relatively common gesture, I note its never done too deeply !!

howdy JR, Sorry haven't been able to find the answer for you. Two cops I've asked said I shouldn't carry, but said they didn't know if there was an actual statute forbidding it. But they add that if you're in a fight and you're the only one using a weapon (or you're the only one who can't get rid of the weapon/ pass it to your buddies) during a fight, you're automatically in the wrong. The metal detectors are going off all night at a lot of clubs.... and all they do is pat your pants pockets, maybe your crotch, and the small of your back. As if no one has ever heard of an ankle holster. ;)

JackRabbit present... Thanks tpe and Packripper. Good wiews and comments , which confirms my thinking had right direction. Last time in weekend mket , I stopped to check knifedesks and alot of thais were doing that, too. I picked up a good one and keeper of the shop showed me , what he had in the waistband: Microtech SOCOM Auto , serious piece. In few seconds there were about dozen guys behind and around us looking , too. Violence is ugly thing to face and it has nothing to do with sanuk. That's why I gather info and pre-think / pre-plan outlines for different "what if's". Packripper, thanks for bothering to ask from police. JR P.S check my last post in "Thai bouncers=pussies..." I left couple of links in there. Maybe info for you? JR

Only cowards carry knives and in Bangkok it would be very unusual to get into trouble anyway.

does anyone happen to know if you can buy pepper-spray legally in Bangkok... and is it legal to carry it out of the country? coward??? yep... 100% card-carrying fully paid up member of cowards anonymous. (p.s. not asking cos I think I need it in BKK... but I would feel a damn sight safer with it here - only it's illegal to buy/sell it here)

Hi x I'm no expert on this question, but I was offered a defence spray by a street trader on Sukhumvit road (somehere around soi 11, I think) He was selling the rest of that type of stuff.. knifes, swords, coshes etc. I don't suppose there would be any problem provided it was in your check-in baggage. ^ ditto those thoughts on check in baggage. ALSO.... there are plenty of US outfits that you can mail order the stuff from ("in plain brown packaging"). A search on Google would probably turn up more than a few. IMO, though.... Pepper spray leaves out a lot of tactical options for you though if you're dealing with bad guys (and of course multiple targets). And sometimes, the bad fellow might not even feel the spray. There are all kinds of police anecdotes on usenet and rec.guns of shooting perps and the guy keeps on coming.

pepper sprays, knifes, electronic shocking devices, all that stuff is legal, though in a fight the rules packripper stated count, and it all ends up with thai systems of: do you have a bank account stating that you have more then 200 000, do you own a jewellry store. I do not know anybody who got into a fight with locals, who didnt start the action, insulted a member of the royal family, or behaved like an asshole

JackRabbit present... Is it hot here or is it just me ? X: I think that packing the spray into Your check-in luggage won't go. It has a pressure agent in it and if I am correct, You can not pack anything pressurized in cargo. Besides I think that You'll get a problem with customs back home (You mentioned it is illegal for You back home). You also made interesting point : You declared peoples carrying defensive tools in Thailand being cowards AND in same breath You ask pepperspray , because You feel better with it back home. Thailand is home for thai peoples and they know the tunes better than most of us.Choice is theirs , so are the reasons. I started this thread for information , not for examining mental state of carriers. aurum: Liked Your comment. Where You found that legality declaration ? JR
