I have a few general questions regarding how one should dress in LOS so that he does not look out of place or stand out like an American Tourist.

While on the road, one must make due with a limited wardrobe, and might be prone to many hours of walking that is not normally the case back home.

Alright...I understand that the weather in late May will be hot and humid.  I am assuming well into the 90's F/30's C.

That being the case, how do the locals dress to accommodate these humit hot conditions.

If one were to wear shorts and a T-shirt and gym shoes to a MP would that be frowned upon and most likely lead to a miffed off Papasan who will jack up the fee for an obvious tourist farang?

The other option is to wear khaki slacks and light T-shirt or Polo shirt; however, I hate the look of wearing gym shoes when dressed in slacks.

During the evening hours I was planning on wearing dark slacks and dark T-shirt or dark collared shirts with black leather shoes or dark Chuck Talyor Hi Tops.  Would I be refused entry at the nicer clubs without the collar or wearing the dark Chuck T's?

One last question...what is common business attire during the bloody hot months?

Thanks,
Ciao!

Actually any thoughts on where to go buy some local brands and styles based on SEA fashion would be greatly appreciated, as well.  Appropriate for a dude in his mid thirties.

Thanks

Briefly, assuming a month stay:

Khakis are great. 2 pair light, 1 dark, İmicrofiber if you can, stays nice, and is cool.

Polo shirts, and nice athletic t-shirts (I like the ones with a tiny Nike logo), cotton.

Bring as many cotton shirts as you can pack, and change often. İLaundry is cheap. İThe local stuff is, and looks, cheap.

Bring plenty of underwear and socks, and change often, for health and odor control.

Bring your gym shoes, and another pair of nicer walking shoes, which can double for evening. İRockport or Timberline make comfortable, stylish stuff. İUse Dr. Scholl's (or equiv) foot spray EVERY day, before putting your shoes on, and after putting them away. İBuy a pair of knockoff sandals for 100-200 baht to use for your trip, and chuck them at the end if you need to. İAnd heed Whisper: no shorts, socks, sandals. İPedicures are cheap: get one. It's fun. Show your toes.

Business people wear nice business suits, same as in any Western city. İThey don't go out of the air conditioned areas much, though.  Office to car to home.

No local brands that I know of - Thais like Western stuff, but tend to have knockoffs at the lower end. İGaysorn Plaza, etc., have designer shops, but they are still quite expensive.

Instead, learn about cloth, or have a knowlegable friend go with you, and have a suit, slacks, and/or shirts made at one of the reputable tailors. İSearch the archives for a recommendation.

Hope this helps.

It doesn't matter what color clothes or type of clothes you wear. It's the color of skin that determines whether or not you get slapped the surcharge.

BK hit the nail on the head with the hammer!!

As for buying cloths. If you are x-large size U.S standards, then you might be shit out of luck with Thai cloths. I'm not a big guy, but like do wear x-large shirts and found that when buying Thai made cloths in the department stores that I had to be very carefull, because their sizes are not really x-large, but more like a size between x-large and large. And I don't like my shirts to be skin tight. ha ha ha!!

And, I've worn nike v-ball shorts, a sleezeless b-ball shirt and high tops to Emmanuelle, Mirage, Ceasars, and Poseidon with no problems. Infact, as long as you did not just come from working out, the females like a ripped body!! ha ha ha!!

I would not suggest you wear that type of cloths to a g-club like Pegasus, Piano or Chateau blanc. I believe they do have dress codes.

And I've also worn the shorts outfit to go go bars with also no problems getting in or getting females.

Good luck and have a good time.

Thin White Duke
ABC knows his stuff- Still amazed I found black Levis 505's that fit- ON THE STREET. Around soi eight or nine if I'm not mistaken. I'll buy a few pairs if the guy is still there when I go back.

Three days change for me.
five day supply underwear, socks.
Interchangeable short sleeve shirts which can be worn day or night,
one pair black trousers, (thanks Lotusland!)
"Dress" sandals
Hi Tek summer hiking boots,
Columbia cargo shorts
"zipoff"style cargo khaki pants/shorts.
Three days wear, off to laundry.

Remember there are alot of clothes for sale, I've learned to travel light buy in country. I take a rolled up duffle bag for the trip back, but love the one carry-on philosophy for the way there. Cheers.

I would bring in only an absolute minimum of clothes and buy everything else in BKK. But not necessarily from the street vendors...

E. g. in the WTC, there is a nice factory outlet selling decent western brands, very nice prices too... I would also try to buy long trousers made of local, very light fabrics. These can be even more comfortable in the heat than shorts.

Regarding what you should wear when:

Are you a tourist on a two-weeks-trip mostly interested in touristy stuff and misbehaving in the red light districts? Then it hardly matters, as long as one doesn't run around like a complete idiot (Socks & Sandals & Shorts, torn or dirty or smelly clothes, red tank top and green trousers etc.) Thai people will recognize and treat you as a tourist anyway, so you can dress like one, if that suits you.

But if you're on a business trip, or if you are dealing with "respectable" Thais, dress as well as possible, and then even better... Impeccable and tasteful attire is really important to Thais, and one can gain face if meeting their expectations - they even know a specific colour for every work day.

So forget about jeans, shorts, trainers and basketball tops then...

Cheers Fritz
