Here you go, the history of the City of Angels, as in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.
***********************
Where Did the Name Los Angeles Come From?

The name Los Angeles is Spanish for The Angels. There is much more to this name, however. On Wednesday, August 2, 1769, Father Juan Crespi, a Franciscan priest accompanying the first European land expedition through California, led by Captain Fernando Rivera Y Moncado, described in his journal a "beautiful river from the northwest" located at "34 degrees 10 minutes." They named the river Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de la Porciúncula. In the Franciscan calendar, August 2 was the day of the celebration of the feast of the Perdono at the tiny Assisi chapel of St. Francis of Assisi. Early in St. Francis? life, the Benedictines had given him this tiny chapel for his use near Assisi. The chapel, ruined and in need of repair, was located on what the Italians called a porziuncola or "very small parcel of land." Painted on the wall behind the altar was a fresco of the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels. Now contained within a Basilica, the chapel was named Saint Mary of the Angels at the Little Portion. The newly discovered "beautiful river" was named in honor of this celebration and this chapel. In 1781, a new settlement was established along that river. The settlement came to be known as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciúncula or The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Little Portion although its official name was simply El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles.

Hzink,
This site is a very valuable resource. I have enjoyed reading through the threads and I am sure we have ALL benefited from the wealth of information provided by many of members, most of which are pleasant, intelligent individuals. However, there are a few, who are nothing more than cowardly, arrogant flaming assholes, whose posts contribute nothing to the site except to feed their own outrageously overly inflated egos. Not a one of which, I'm sure, would have the courage, if they have any balls at all, to say such things to your face.
Hermes, you are a first class example.

Los Angeles is reverently referred to by the local politicians, news media and travel brochures as "The City of Angels".

For us who live here it also the city of "Crips. Bloods, Vermont Street gang, South Centrals, and many other notable groups that help make this city such a pleasant place to visit. (sic)

The most important aspect of this city is that it has a very large airport with numerous direct flights to BKK

..... but I wasn't aware you could fly directly from LAX to BKK. It is faster to bounce LAX or SFO to Hong Kong or Toyko (where ever) and then to BKK.
Is direct service from LAX to BKK something new?
Thx.

I also was not aware of a dirrect flight from the west coast to BKK. Though besides hong kong and Tokyo, you can als stop in Taipei!! ha ha ha ha!!

Los angeles is known as LA. And nothing else. And only an american could have presented the comment u made. So LA do NOT mean City of angels. But of course, it does take some reality to know that. Im darn grateful that most americans isnt as ignorant as u are.

Funny, 'cos I'm not (an American).

I am fully aware of the history of the name of Los Angeles, but colloquially LA is very often referred to as the 'City of Angels', both in public, as well as the media. A search on City of Angels leads to movies dealing with and taking place in Los Angeles.

Of course, that's something that someone that is NOT American wouldn't realy know, no matter how much of an authoritative swagger they prance around with.

Oh, and folks in New York *do* know where on the West Coast the City of Angels can be found, though I doubt most would know the history of the name.

Your voice would be much better used if u concentrated in make yourself quiet, and for once listen to reality instead of your delusions of grandiure.

Maybe just taking a nice ESL course would be a god start for you, eh?

By the way, my original comment was done tongue-in-cheek, and was meant in a humorous manner. Maybe you'd like to also take a course in 'sense of humour', while you're studying English, eh?

Now, you go make yourself be off, before you go make yourself look like more fool, yah?

Lastly, an honestly curious question about Krung-Thep's meaning of 'City of Angels'. I'm just wondering how the word 'Angels' translates in this case, as I don't think that the Thai culture has an exact match for 'Angels' (a judeo/christian concept/creation as far as I know).

Certainly, wraiths/ghosts/demons are multi-cultural and span millenia before the Christians ever thought about them - but I'm wondering where in the original name the word 'Angels' is, or if that is the exact definition, within the cultural context... or maybe it really means 'City of Floating Spirits', or something similar.
