I seem to remember that my first trip plan had some delusions of absorbing a little culture during the daytime. That quickly devolved into sleeping late, LT leftovers, scrounging meals, waiting for the hangover to fade and by then nightfall and start all over again.
I don't exactly have regets about that because it allowed my to repurpose an awful lot of taxi fare to more interesting pursuits. Don't beat yourself up if you never get farther from Sukhumvit than Patpong. It happens.

winkelried - good suggestion! ÝI went to Muang Boran and really enjoyed it. ÝIt is all outside so beware that it is really hot - dress accordingly!!!
I went with a couple of girls I barfined from Executive Lounge (in Patpong II). ÝThey were nice daytime sightseeing companions. ÝI think that bar opens at 10 or 11 AM most days. ÝI paid them something for their trouble at the end of the afternoon.

You can go R/T on the bus for under 200 baht and pay whatever rate the shitbags at Pattaya bus station are charging these days to get into town.
I've never actually considered going to PTY for "culture" and look forward to your F/R. The girls are the place as I see it, the beach pests ruin the seashore, and I can't recall any attractions of compelling interest.

It's easy to get caught in the 'party-all-night, sleep-all-day' trap, especially if you're on a short vacation, and need to cram it in as fast as possible (pun intended).
As I've aged (like fine cheeze-wiz?), I take longer trips, so I like to actually go out for daytime activities.
One game I like to play, is to go to a different BTS station every day, try to find something interesting, and, more to the point, try to get laid in a strange neighborhood. ÝWalking around, you see ST hotels, MPs, and local bars where you are not expected - but usually welcomed. ÝThis requires a bit of Thai language, but surprising little. ÝMostly, it requires a good anti-perspirant, and a sense of adventure.
This is how you will become an 'Old Hand' - not reading this board, or any board. ÝJust take a bus somewhere, walk around, and try to get back home without a taxi (your safety net). ÝLook at stuff. ÝUse your basic Thai.
Soak it in.

So far I want to thank everyone who made a suggestion in this thread. Some of the suggestions I have already done, but it is nice to read others did them too.
About this http://www.ancientcity.com/muangboran/index.htm I will surely visit this. Also Haam Sups suggestion of visiting 'off the beaten track' neigbourhoods is a nice one.
When I went to visit a fellow Dutchman in the Bang Kwan Prison last time I was in BKK I walked around in a suburb of BKK. All very Thai, almost no tourists, just some who like me visited the prison. Had a meal at a road side eatery, good food, if only a 'little' spicey.
