Thinking seriously on the mafia behind most of the beggars around Bangkok I decided long time ago to give them something they cannot share with the bloody Boss....so, after leaving NANA BTS station (my usual stop in Sukhumvit area) I often buy fruits or grilled meat in sticks from the guys selling those in small carts on the street....a task that only require 3 min stop. I usually get rid of the food within one block. At least I know the beggars are EATING and directly using the things received....

agreed Pinga, a better way to assist for sure, as mentioned elsewhere, I often clean out the clothes cupboard and drop a bagful somewhere [ over the fence by the nana BTS, soi 6 for example ] - but skip, would just suggest one thing, re the woman with babies, have a good look, more often than not, no resemblance at all ..... Mr.J - like to hear the flower girl story, used to see a real switched on little thing called "Pat" who I think came from Korart out nightly, had a plump, shifty, middle aged "Aunt" hovering in the background - she was certainly worth trying to save, havent seen her for some time, so maybe her life has returned to normal i.e. family/school/sleep etc.

It is very hard to pretend that the beggars, especially the little ones, are not there. After a couple of days walking around BKK, I started to unload my coins on the beggars, but I did learn to keep a few 1 baht coins for toilet papers at MBK.

Just a thought: If no one gave money to beggars then we wouldn't be hounded by them everywhere we go in Asia or other poorer nations. and then the beggars would have to get off their asses and earn some cash by making handicrafts, singing, playing instruments or that kinda thing.... Mind you the ones that are unable to do these sorts of things are a different story. But i have no pity for those who are just too lazy or have too little self esteem to think that begging is the only way out. really its not for most of them.

Upon posting my last thought i remembered one instance that really made me feel for 2 young boys. My gf and i had just finished eating some KFC (on a park bench kind of thing) and we were about to throw away the few remaining french fries and half a watered down coke when the 2 boys came over to us and begged us to give them the food. Of course we did so and i felt so sorry for them i told them to wait there while i went and bought them each a fresh chicken burger. I have never seen 8 year olds chow down a burger so fast! and they were so happy..... Food, clothes and other things are great to give to beggars.... money is another story... so often do you see beggars with a cigarette in their mouth... if they dont have enuff money to eat then how can they smoke?

Hey bros, the thing that got me the most was not just seeing the children out having to beg, but seeing them out at 11 or 12 at night when they should be home in bed. One of my fondest memories from my first trip was when a young lady came into the bar my ex worked in, holding flowers for sale in one hand and her daughters hand with the other. Even I know a sales tactic when I see one, but the little girl, who couldn't have been more then 3 was the most beautiful little angel I have seen in years. The mother asked if I wanted to buy some flowers and I asked if she would allow me to take a picture of her daughter and she said yes. I took the picture and handed her 50 baht. She tried to hand me several flowers and I told her to keep the flowers, that the money was for the picture. She wai'd me and left with her daughter. Of all the photos I have taken in LOS this one will always be special. The downside to having this photo is that everytime I look at that wonderful face I can't help but wonder what that face might look like or where that face might be working 15 or 16 years from now. What a world. Peace

yes I give money to beggars... I don't really think about the serious implications it could have (i.e. creating a demand)... I just feel it's such a tiny gesture on my part. But I don't give to the ones who hassle me. My s.o is very much against me giving money to beggars, he would much rather give 1000baht to a good charity than have me giving 10baht to a beggar. And I can't say he is wrong. It does make more sense.

X, as opposed to your s.o and you, I prefer a third option which is to help poor people in need but who are closer to me, ie people that I see on a more regular basis (maid, driver, or any other person with whom i cross path on a more regular basis and who i get o know. I am not criticizing the rest -big charities are needed cuz of the good organization that they provide and are better equiped to deal with greater needs. But i feel bad knowing that of my $100 contributed only $40 may reach the needed as $60 may have to go to paid the charities' own big costs (i have no clue about those numbers - i only provide them to illustrate the point)

Smegma... I do your 3rd option too - that is actually my favourite. And also totally agree on the charity thing... fine if I give to a charity in my own country... I know how much goes on "running costs" pr I can easily find out, but I don't know in foreign countries which charities are reputable and which are not. This is always a point of friction between me and Mr. X.

I came to the conclusion, right or wrong, that the cute little flower sellers are all together too well dressed and organised to be in desperate need of cash so I don't fall for it. But equally I have noticed that when I have walked down Sukhumvit with a TG, they well regularly drop coins into the bowls of the disabled. The TG's seem happy to share a little cash with those people. Dave
