Well a few requests for a post on my Bangkok fishing day off so here you go and dedicated to chrisboy!.
The deal I bought was for all-inclusive ½ day which includes collection from the hotel, and unlike myself you need to plan for this as a heavy night before is not advisable with the early morning collection. Resulting mad rush to get ready, and forget essential suntan cream, you sit by a lake all day and the effects of the sun is doubled.
Can not tell you how long it took to get there as a fell asleep in the transit after two hotel pickups. A right mixture two Americans, three Australians, a French man, me the “pomee bastard” and one TG who was with the Frenchman, and she was very disgusted how anyone could hurt a fish.
TG and fishing do not mix well!
The advertisement for the lake was a “fishing spot to be remembered by its natural beauty”, my description would be more of a “F***** big hole in the ground”.
We get given some “gear” which I though was more suitable for Tune or Shark fishing (how wrong could I be) and we were paired off (I was with the odd Australian) and sent with our guides to a cabin.
Bait was a mixture of various small fish, paste and bread stuff!!, big lumps the size of baseballs with a big hook in the middle and lob it out. Real technical and a lot of skill required for this style of fishing. The Americans were first in to a fish, he was leant back on the back two legs of the chair with his feet up in the air against a railing, a real big insult for the Thai’s this exposing your feet in this manner. However, his punishment was well taken, we think he hooked a Catfish, we can’t be sure because the first run of the fish took him from his laid back position to flat on his face, skidded along the deck a few centimetres and got a belly full of splinters and let go of the rod.
Credit due though, he kept fishing and drinking all day the size of his wounds would have sent me back to the nearest doctor.
This was the only significant fish hooked all day, although many smaller fish were caught, mainly Siamese Carp (my biggest 28 kilos, biggest on the day 29 kilos to the splintered American), also quite a few Snakeheads, biggest here went 7 kilo’s but one hell of a mean looking fish that “hang on” and fight to the end.
Plenty of Singha and Heineken available from the restaurant, and very good Thai food from a kitchen that had seen better days.
The fishing could have been better, but the day is best remembered from the laughs introduced by the beer and nationality “piss” taking, of which I took most off, but then again it is understandable as the English are the best anglers.
Highly recommend this for a daytime R & R, but it really depends on the company and I had the please of a first class crowd, although the Frenchman spent most of the time inside the cabin with the TG.
Each to their own, but for me fishing first, women second, unless they fish or smell like fish!!!!

Nice story. What was odd about the Australian?
For fishing near BKK I always just went to the fish restaurants along the coast. But I suppose your way will work as well. Please remember the sun creme next time, that's got to put a bit of a dent in your nightlife.

Sounds like a pretty fun trip over all. How much did it cost? I wasn't really aware that there were any decent sized fish in inland lakes in LOS.

yup, the prices is a bit steep if u booked through the tours agent!! i've been given a direct contact to the owners' of this fishing ground, but have yet to check it out. maybe during my visit in Jan 03, any bros wanna join me??

I do not like to state anyone’s name on a forum and so referred to my companions as Australians etc, in hindsight this might seem disrespectful but it was not intended. The “ODD” Australian was not a reflection on his character. More that he was the odd numbered Australian (3 of them).
The location was “Bungsam Lan” don’t think this is the same one as “chrisboy” is referring to, its about 15k’s away from the BKK centre, but takes a lot longer to get to it than it sounds with the hotel pickups and traffic etc.

Although, I only paid around 4000 baht.
Fish size can be very large 6-9 foot long!!!, which by any countries book is big for freshwater. Watch those “Snakeheads” they do not get so big but with razor teeth you can easily loose a finger or two.
Thinking about another bash in April if anyone is interested.
