Ah, I forgot about this thread. Actually that was intrinsic to my reasoning (that part of the prejudice is that they are products of poor Thai mothers and farang fathers, if that is the case; and that the parent's inability to bestow social skills upon their children is a handicap). The fact remains though, that one will rarely come across a luk krung captain of industry here (whether his/her parents were wealthy or people of status or not). No luk krung is the chairman of any listed company. No luk krung generals. The closest I think is n'Bamm (although formerly an actress and model/presenter) of the Rasadorn party who is 1/8 farang, I believe. I would think that whoever your parents are, you'd still have the opportunity to become completely Thai (in terms of social skills, group connections, etc), just from growing up here (ala Christy and Jonas). Thus, I made a blanket statement regarding LKs, that there is (likely) a glass ceiling placed on them by society. The only other explanation for their lack of non-entertainment success would be genetic inferiority (which is a racist comment I will NOT make). In theory, a luk krung should have an advantage in that they are often raised biligually here (supposedly getting the best of both cultures as well). If you go to BPS, ISB, RIS, etc., you'll find many half Thai children (which aren't schools for the poor or lower class in any case). All of my LK friends from such schools, however have run into some kind of wall (glass ceiling) after high school or after university graduation (the grad rates seem awfully skewed towards dropping out as well). The path of success seems completely geared towards entertainment (which on the surface looks good... and hints at interracial harmony, but in reality is probably the harshest and most unforgiving field to be in) with a few running restaurant or bar type businesses. Anyhoo, just coffee talk. salud, Pack
Quote: from Chompoo on 2:08 am on Nov. 2, snip E.g. the vast majority of luk-kreungs are from poor Thai mothers and farang fathers, so they typically do not have the social skills and connections for career advancement (which unfortunately in Thailand is not just merit based). I think if a son or daughter of a wealthy Thai man with his white wife were to grow up in Thailand as any other Thai, then his options are not limited at all. There may be some initial prejudices upon first meeting him or her, but once his language skills and social and family ties have been established it will pass. The same is true for a hiso Thai woman and her farang husband assuming she has the connections and he is a respectable businessman.
