Best tread I've seen in a while...
My three short visits have all occurred within the last two years, but already I have strong doubts of returning any time soon. The language barrier is by far the most difficult hurtle for me. I'm embarrassed at how little Thai I understand, which in turn suppresses my motivation to practice it more. I also find that while I still enjoy the company of Thai women, I'm losing interest in Thailand itself.
After my first trip, I thought I might retire in Thailand some day, possibly in the vicinity of Chiang Mai or Phuket. After finally visiting these areas in the flesh, I think the odds are pretty slim. I just can't seem to get used to the shanty towns, the smog, and the hard sell guilt trip tactics some Thais use with farangs.
There are some other issues I have with Thailand, but I don't want to turn my post into some sort of Thai-bashing tirade. The Thais play the hand they're delt the best they know how, just like any other folks. My lack of Thai language ability is my own damn fault, and nobody can fix it but me. The current political crackdown on personal freedoms in Thailand is no more bassackward than what's occuring in my own country (US). Also, for every Thai that has tried to scam or trick a farang, there is a farang who has blatently and publicly disrespected the customs and culture of the Thais.

The grass is always greener wherever you're not.
Friends who retire to 6 months in Thailand/6 months in the US/etc. etc. are good examples making the best of that maxim - it works well for them. A little bit of the best of both worlds - and move on when the worst starts to become a drag. 
That having been said - on a negative note the best everywhere seems to be getting worse  . But on a positive note the remedy for that is to just keep trying something new

One of the biggest draws to LOS, my retirement money goes way further here then in the US plus I can pull younger women then I can back home.
I like Pattaya to party but Chiang Mai may be where I end up.

Easy to meet good girls in LOS. Just don't expect to meet them in bars. I like smart women so I would go to book stores when an author would have a reading. I'd go to the Phi Beta Kappa dinners in Philly. No I'm not a PBK but that didn't stop me from going. Another good place is church socials. Supermarkets to me were a target rich environment. I'd pick up a piece of meat and ask a women how to cook it. I was like a shark looking for lunch always looking, always moving and talking. Did I get turned down, sure but many times I was successful.

PopSecret, I couldn't agree more. Language, or rather lack of speaking one, is a real bitch. Three years of spanish in school equals nada for me. First wife was or should I say is German and I did make a effort to learn the language and failed. Always thought in English. Couldn't get over the hump. I would pay a decent sum to be able to take a pill to learn a language. Hell, I would even pay it to learn English!

Sorry to say BigD, but if you haven't learnt the language, at least the grasp of it, after x amount of trips over how many years, I doubt you will ever have the wherewithall to learn it, as a resident.

Thailand is not for everyone...West is not for everyone... and some people are for nowhere...
Many people get bored and frustrated after hanging out in BKK after a few years, but it takes me much less to be bored in Farangland. Left BKK after several years there mostly because I imagined better professionnal outcomes in my home country. Succeeded over my expectations businesswise but looking for a sound way to resettle in BKK somehow, and definetely have a blast everytime I come to BKK, at least every 2 months. I'm having actually more fun than ever as I don't feel that picky about girls or interested kindda fitting in thai society, nor too troubled in hanging mostly in western oriented areas which are issues I found much more troublesome while living in Thailand.
One thing I never found frustrating over there though, as a tourist or an expat, is sex. And enough sex makes a man lighter for sure!

This seems a rather odd. Whenever I don't know much, I try to learn more. There *WILL* be a plateau phase you reach, where you know enough to say "Feed me" and "Where is the crapper", at which point your conscious wants you to believe that you know enough - but you just have to push past that. Try to learn 2-3 new words per day. It's not easy, and you won't always reach that goal, but you will hit a point where it is fun again to learn.

How's that? Seen all temples? Not seen anything new? Bored with the culture? There's plenty to see, and so far, after 6 visits, I have not run out of new and interesting places - most of which I wasn't even aware of before my trip.

Arguably, the same argumnet, dressed differently, can be applied to many different places, most of which are in the West as well. Clearly, you've never dealt with any Comerica LifeInsurance/investment salesperson in the West, or never ventured outside the comfy zone of western cities

Don't forget the farangs who won't miss any opportunity to scam other farangs with hair-raising invest schemes, time-share crap, and 'deals of the century'. There's plenty of those around.

Unless you have absolutely loads of money it is important to learn the language of the country you like to visit. Some are very good at this some not so.
I only speak basic Thai so if I ever lived there I would have to make the effort to speak it better. It is only polite, it is also very useful for countless reasons.
I believe that the Thais don't really have a concept of Love & Sex the same as we have.
What is really important to them is Money & Security ?
Sex is a recreational activity and Love is for Farangs.
However I believe they can be very fond of you but not in the luvvy duvvy way that so many Farangs desire.
Luvvy Duvvy Moon in June stuff only lasts about 18 months and is just an addictive emotional trip ?
REAL love is enduring ?
A very wise Thai girl told me that all the Farangs she knew who lived in LOS permanently went 'Ding Dong' or Baa after a while. They just went weird.
She advised me to come for a holiday. 6 7 or 8 months at a time even. But never live in LOS all the time ?
I wonder if she is right ?
