Possibly you have never heard of the 'Free Love' movement of the sixties? What you describe was quite commonplace from about 67 (The Summer of Love) until the big Herpies outbreak of the 70's.
I suspect it was the fear Herpies and then HIV that killed the 'Free Love" movement, not moral rightousness...
