You and BigD are exactly right that's why it seems to be some good luck that she's no longer Buddha. It is easy to spot the ex-BGs at the Fremont Wat here in Silicon Valley. Fortunately its a little over an hour drive from my house.
All the Thais that are anywhere close are all either university students or middle class and never were BGs.
One guy where I work though married a BG about a year ago and things are getting dicey. He met her on his first trip out (he went over with an expert but I don't think he listened very well). She was a Pattaya BG and has a family in Isan that are/were rice farmers. Even as they were taking their vows with the monks her mom was asking this guy for money. It was really sad. Her dad makes 200 baht on a good day and seems to be quite outspoken in the village but not to respected. I really feel for his new son in law. My wedding was pretty fun and we didn't have the all the out streched hands to deal with. That would have been a deal breaker for me.
At work Loknar calls our friend, "Milk and Cookies". Poor bastard really got caught in the headlights. 
His BG/wife is sweet and seems to want to make it work but here's what they are up against: she is barely able to speak any en-grish, she is also barely literate in Thai or Lao. She has never driven a car so she's trapped in their house. She has a daughter from a Thai guy who's about 6 and now she's there. And as an additional treat both my friend and his wife are now putting on weight... 
So that's the how things are set up for them. All of us are hoping for the best. If it doesn't work out in the first 3 years here she can be sent back but that will be hellish to live through. There are new laws in the US requiring this. Most BGs are aware of this I have since learned. They seem to be pretty well informed...
I plan to be careful about introducing these 2, our jobs are vastly different so my wife wife won't be meeting her for sometime. It is hard for a lot of people BGs included to liver outside their own country. I used to live in Europe and I loved it but a lot of people that I worked with were complaining all the time.
I am hoping that my wife will be like me in this area. her past suggests to me that she can adjust well. Anyway I appreciate your advice.

I'm interested in the failed deals your talking about. What was the deal that you think made things break down? On http://www.mangosauce.com they suggest that the issue is often one where the guy appears wealthy in LOS but when the BG returns to chilly farangland with guy that he lives in a cinder block flat and couldn't get a grudging mercy f*** from the cleaning women there. Or as my friend likes to say; "He couldn't get laid in a womens prison with a pocket full of pardons."

Just curious to hear from some of you guys. What is the going rate these days for paying a dowery to an Issan family.
A friend of mine married one about a year ago (He could easily have done better IMHO. Young good looking guy with his shit together, except when it comes to women). Anyways, he told me the other week that he gave her Mom 20K USD. I guess he was sold on the sob story of her being alone, and her house needed to be repaired. He said she used 10k to fix the house, and gave the other 10k to the other siblings.
I don't think they asked for 20k, but he just wanted to be extra nice I suppose.

Yep LG's brother paid 80K ($2K) in Lao, LG's parents said it was up to me so I doubled it to 160K ($4K) much less then your friend paid and I was doing them a good turn in my book.

You seem like a nice guy. But you have so many strikes again this "marriage" that you need to have a semi-miracle to make it work. Take a BG out of her home country and transplant them into farangland is just like pushing a huge rock up the hill. Lot of hard work and you may still slip.......Wish you the best though. Next time ( in case you fail), if you still want to take a Thai lovelie back home, try the "good girl" category with some college education. The chances of that working is much, much better.

Ya he is too nice, or too stupid. I could add some other stories to the plot here, but I am not sure if he reads this board. Theres a lot good advice on here from the guys who have already been married to TGs.
For instance, I told him something that was pointed out on here once. That if you go into things acting like you have the cash of bill Gates to impress these girls or family, be prepared for them to milk you in the same proportion.

Sometimes it works fine.
I know a couple here in the States, husband is USA born and bred, wife is a Isaan villager that came here as a garment worker sponsored by a Thai-Chinese businessman.
They are doing ok after about 7 years of marriage.
Fewer problems than a lot of couples I would say.
She is a clever lady, respects her husband but is not in awe of him.
I once observed to her that her husband was a smart man, she answered
"Yes, he is smart about some things."
So I think it isn't only the college educated that make a good adjustment here.
I once introduced her to a college-educated Thai lady in my place of business who snubbed her like a Sarah Lawrence grad meeting a girl from Iowa State.
Class distinctions travel well I guess.
