It most certainly has, but it is being radically and systematically destroyed by the aforementioned human filth. Can you imagine being a “normal” Thai person who by some sequence of events takes a trip to Pattaya or Patpong for the first time. Who can blame him for thinking that all white people are loathsome, sleazy, drunken f***wits?
After my first one day visit to Pattaya, I have to agree that that place is a plant all to it's own. Makes Patpong seem like a respectable place. I have never seen so many scary creatures (Farangs) in one place. No desire to visit that planet again!

Shit I was "out of there" in 3 hours FIRST available bus,, way too many Euro lesso's and low lifes.
Hated the place. In fact the only place I have ever hated in Thailand on 12 visits and travelling the whole country ( well nearly).

Pattaya's certainly an interesting 'sociological case study', if you're looking for the lowest of the lo-so.
Like has been pointed out previously -- it only makes you (that is, if you give a care about yourself) look better in comparison.

Even a trip to places portrayed to be paradise, like Koh Samui and Koh Tao might give him the same impression, as it is mainly populated by opium-smoking, dreadlocked backpackers.
We are a race of cultural scavengers with respect for nothing but our own primal instincts.

Sorry to quote the whole above, but to follow your usually impeccable logic, hyper, you must include the Thai in the whole human race as well. Of course. In that case, who's to say that the "normal Thai", as you say, visiting Patpong or Pattaya would in fact be appalled. Yeah, it's not concealed in a big dark building with neon lights surrounded it. And granted, the Thai man's tastes in women as far as ideal looks go does not usually fit the looks of most of the girls in those places... but from what I've seen of the "normal Thai" (incl. lower, middle, and upper middle classes) he'd probably wish he were getting loaded with his friends surrounded by cheap and easy chicks too. Most "normal Thai" would think that the greatest heaven on earth. Especially if you threw in a little gambling....
I mean, what else would you expect a "normal Thai" to enjoy, settling back for a quiet eve at home over his latest cartoon? Or another 6 hr round of his latest shoot-em-up computer game? Or most likely a whole evening devoted to the new soap opera on channel 7 starring Tang Mo. Geez,she's hot. The point I am making is that... Since we are all human with these urges--your point--and Thai are not known for intellectual or artistic pursuit... Hypocracy is the name of the game in Thailand. In the West that is a terrible vice, here in this culture it is a kind of virtue if practiced appropriately. Wow, different mores, it confounds the imagination. My sardonicism is not meant for you, Hypershade, but in general this is difficult for all Westerners to swallow. Especially when someplace as especially vulgar as Pattaya or Patpong is regarded. Everything must look good and discreet on the surface or else, yes, it is appalling. But in actuality you won't find too many tee-totalling (if that's how you spell it) "normal Thai".
We are aware of the alcohol use statistics here.
It's much more likely that for any "normal" Thai man somehow accidentally visiting these places he'd frown and say "Uncouth" to the other "normal Thai" around him, but just below that surface the debauchery would without fail remind him that Oh how he'd long to get away from the wife and kids at this moment to get loaded with his friends in a Thai place with lots of cute dekserve gik possibilities, or heading wasted to the massage parlor, either one of which he was probably doing the weekend before.
And as for "normal" Thai women, what do you expect them to say? They are after all women.

Aside from that, who in their right mind can deny that the *majority* of the farangs in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket are specimens out of the bottom of the social barrel?
