Forget about Porn !
Does anybody know about making a film in Thailand ?
I don’t mean Porn and not even ‘art-house’.
Before I got married my ex took me to a Thai Cinema in Phuket.
Thai film in Thai, no subtitles I was the only farang in the audience.
Not a great film but not a bad one either. Lots of young gangs shooting
guns etc. A low budget affair. With a little better direction and a better
script/story this low budget film could have been quite enjoyable.
How are films made in Thailand ?
How is the finance arranged and the actors engaged?
Are there lawyers and agents everywhere like Hollywood or Film-Mafia
like in Hong Kong ?
Could the Thais give a FCUK ?

you can make a film in thailand no problem
of course there are lawyers and agents involved if you are gonna use stars like Tony JAR
but if you are gonna make a small inde film using acting students, film grads are crew and rent the gear it can pretty much be shot from the hip without a care in the world.. of course it all comes down to the budget, sets, will you be need to close down SOI 18 for the night to shoot the getaway scene?
you wanna close down NEP to shoot the pickup?
these will involve police and councils
gonna have stunts? this will involve insurance companies. of course you can get around this with documents..
it all depends if you want to shoot a studio move.
or you gonna finance it yourself and then try and pick up a distributor during the filming or after at film festivals.

My GF's father is a director, with several films to his credit, with the last major production he did being (in english) "Chinatown").
Usually he procures or writes the scripts himself, then his production company will pitch for the finance (I understand that they have a stable of prospective financiers).
They have a team of lawyers who settle the contracts for the production staff and handle the permits for the shooting sites.
I dont know much about the editing and distribution side but I imagine it is the same as the west.

not to mention that CHINATOWN is considered one of the best films of all time!!
Im thinking this is a different chinatown hahhahaha
and come on polansky has done some good movies since 74

I'm sure with a little better direction and a better script/story it could be loads of fun. But if that were true, why isn't everyone doing it? That's a good question.
Films in Thailand are made the same everywhere else. However cheaper, it's still who you know therefore the business is the same. However, if you make a film in Thailand under Thai agreements, it then has to be released in Thailand. And you will need lawyers, consistant travel to and from the country if not a resident, and good trustworthy friends to make it happen. All of it is to protect you and your work. The stipulation of the distribution rights will allow it outside the Kingdom. So if you are making your own independent film without any agreements (like a handheld Blair Witch) and you can remove it from Thailand as personal use, fine. But why risk that?
As for finance, it's the same. Do you have $$? Can you risk a loan on your assets in which your film will pay it off? Can you insure your crew on workman's comp? Or is your film worth the risk for a production company to invest with distribution rights? The real success of a filmmaker is selling the film. That's why there's so much "porn" as it's the cheapest type to make in which the return is low risk.
There are lawyers and agents like in Hollywood and there are Film-Mafia like Hong Kong **and** Hollywood. In fact, there are more film-mafia in Hollywood than in Hong Kong. Just talk to Jackie Chan if you want to make a film in Hong Kong and you'll be okay.
