Thank you for the info. I have made a copy of CGs post and will make sure I have the floppy the next time I visit thailand. I believe there must be alot of members and other visitors to thailand that do not know of the keylogger problem. When going on internet explorer a few minutes ago, I checked the address history of what site has been logged on and both Fidelity.com and Vanguard.com, both large brokerage houses were listed. If they were checking account information, they might be in trouble. I may not still have a full understanding of the potential for ripoffs using wireless, but if I have up-to-date firewall protection, I assume it is OK to do on-line banking when I get my laptop? And are the lines available in the hotels safe, as this is where I also will be using my laptop? Thanks again for the information. I am sure you may have saved some members some hassles.

Quote: from Thai Traveler on 10:22 am on Dec. 28, 2005 WIFI is only how the connection is made (instead of using a cable). If your laptop is configured properly, has a personal firewall and the site you connect to use encryption (https), then you should be ok.
Good info here from Thai Traveler. But I disagree with the WiFi part. That is for public Wifi conncetions like at Starbucks, etc. Once your keystrokes are in an open network, they can be picked up altho the equipment to do so may be more expensive. I think it is much less secure than your own phone line and ISP connection with your own laptop. Again, this is for public Wifi conncetions like at Starbucks, etc. If it is Wifi on your own secure network to your phone line, it should be fine. But few tourists would have such equipment let alone a direct line.

bkkfella, That's not quite correct, Thail Traveller did say using a https (SSL all online banking uses this type of encryption or better) connection which will encrypt the packets so even if they are packet captured (sniffed) on a public wifi they cannot be deciphered. However any normal unsecured communications http, ftp, etc. can be read with a packet sniffer.

Most banks use dropdown menus when logging on to defeat key loggers as they can not record mouse movements. Another way to defeat key loggers would be to type your password with extra characters then select the extra characters and cut (Ctrl-X), ie. If your password was “Pass890” then type “PassWord1234567890” then with the mouse select by scrolling over “Word1234567” with the left mouse button held down, then press the right mouse button and select cut. The sensible thing for banks would be to encourage the computer industry to install smart card readers, I remember when my bank introduced telephone banking some 20 years ago they gave me a DTMF key pad that had a small speaker that I held over telephone microphone so why not now issue a small USB dongle or USB smart card reader. BB, Many banks do offer usb dongles or a keygen keyring which displays a code that changes every few minutes. For those readers who use online banking and are worried about internet cafes why not get a WIFI and GPRS enabled phone so you don't need to use internet cafes?
